A part of WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption scheme requires users to set up the service with their phone as the 'primary' device for an account. In July, the company announced they were exploring next-generation encryption, allowing true multi-device connectivity without requiring a connection to a smartphone. As part of that, it seems WhatsApp will launch on iPad in the near future.
WhatsApp is set to launch on iPad soon.
According to a recent tweet from WABetaInfo, a reliable source for upcoming WhatsApp features, Facebook-owned company is currently testing multi-device 2.0 support in the latest beta version of the app. Now, both iPad and Android tablets will be able to be used as 'linked devices' with a WhatsApp account.

In its next tweet, WABetaInfo declared that it would be a native app rather than a web app. Back in June, Mark Zuckerberg and other members from Facebook personally reached out to the founder of WABetaInfo to discuss upcoming features for the app, including the ability to review disappearing messages and images after a certain period once again before they vanish completely.
