If you're using an older version of WhatsApp on your iPhone or Android and have disabled automatic updates, you may need to manually update your app to the latest version. Specifically, for protection, you should use version 2.19.246 on Android and 2.19.120 on iOS.
WhatsApp Vulnerability Allows Hackers to Take Control of Entire Group Conversations, Leading to App Crashes
- Get WhatsApp for Android.
- Download WhatsApp for iPhone.
According to the cybersecurity company Check Point, a severe flaw allows attackers to disrupt group chats. They can easily do this by using a debugging tool in a web browser like Chrome, editing your messages before sending them to all members in the group. Every time one of them opens the message, the app crashes.
The only remedy at that time was to completely erase all user data. Since every member in the group had to employ this method, there was no way to recover the group's data. To fully resolve the incident, you will need to wipe clean all groups affected by the harmful messages.
Facebook couldn't turn a blind eye to this incident as it had a massive impact on users and also didn't want to turn WhatsApp into a useless application.
WhatsApp is utilized by over 1.5 billion people across 180 countries, meaning this simple flaw could provide malicious actors with a widespread attack opportunity. This social media giant was informed about the incident before it was publicly disclosed. However, there are still some vulnerabilities that Facebook has yet to fix, one of which would allow attackers to take over conversations and impersonate users. Fortunately, there is no sign that this loophole has been exploited.
On the company's side, they have released a partial WhatsApp fix to prevent users from being tricked into sending private messages to entire groups. And they have also addressed issues related to videos (a flaw that made playing a file you received equivalent to granting access to all the information on your phone).
Regarding related issues, the Federal Trade Commission will soon issue a ban on Facebook, potentially disrupting their plans to integrate the infrastructure behind Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram. It won't prevent companies like NSO from selling spyware tools for these apps, but at least, it will make it more difficult for hackers when they want to steal users' personal data.
