When buying a laptop with the new Intel Meteor Lake generation chip, don't forget to update the BIOS.

Laptops equipped with Intel Core Ultra chips, the Meteor Lake generation with a completely new design, have already reached the hands of consumers and the first reviewers. At this point, some individuals have begun to realize that the BIOS and firmware operating the CPU chip on these new laptops, the version provided by Intel for pre-installation at OEM factories, may not be the optimal choice for maximizing the performance of the Meteor Lake chip.

According to a review by UltrabookReview, author Andrei Girbea discovered that the pre-installed BIOS firmware in slim laptops with Meteor Lake chips is not optimized software, especially in the process of power delivery to the processing chip, thereby severely affecting performance.

Also according to UltrabookReview's review, Intel has acknowledged the situation and is working with PC manufacturers to provide the latest BIOS version. For example, Asus-assembled laptops are receiving the latest UEFI firmware update, optimizing performance for the device.

What's the difference in performance before and after updating the BIOS for Meteor Lake laptops? According to UltrabookReview, the Cinebench benchmark delta increases by up to 12.5%:

After updating the BIOS, I immediately reran Cinebench after the computer restarted. With Cinebench R23, the CPU started operating from 50W power, then running for a period of time until it reached only 35W when the chip achieved the highest benchmark score. With a continuous 10-minute test, the chip also started at 50W, but after about 5 to 6 minutes, it stabilized at 28W. The scores are as follows:

BIOS 201: Cinebench R23 multicore 12357 (highest), 11342 (10-minute loop), single-core 1751 points
BIOS 203: Cinebench R23 multicore 13873 (highest), 12132 (10-minute loop), single-core 1761 points

Similarly, the Chinese channel GoldenPigUpgrade also addressed the issue with power delivery on the old BIOS before the official release of the Meteor Lake chip to the market. After updating the BIOS, both power consumption and CPU performance have seen significant improvements.

At the same time, Intel has also announced that they are optimizing new drivers and firmware to maximize the power of both the CPU and GPU, especially in cases where the chip operates at power levels below 28W, such as in ultra-thin Ultrabooks. These optimization updates will be delivered to Meteor Lake computer users in Q1 2024.
