The modern version of Mother's Day originated in the United States in the early 20th century, initiated by a young woman named Anna Jarvis from Philadelphia. After her mother's passing, Anna felt remorse for not doing enough for her mother and was appalled by the indifferent attitude of Americans towards their mothers. This led her to campaign for a nationwide celebration of Mother's Day.
Due to her perseverance and determination, Mother's Day was organized in most states by 1911. In 1914, the President of the United States signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday of May as Mother's Day each year.

Vietnam, with its deep-rooted tradition of filial piety, traditionally honors mothers on the Vu Lan day - the 7th lunar month, International Women's Day on March 8, and Vietnamese Women's Day on October 20.
