Travelers often think that buying flight tickets early is cheaper. In reality, there's only one best time to purchase tickets.
The Huffington Post reports that CheapAir, a travel agency, analyzed flight data in 2014 and concluded that buying tickets too late would cost passengers a lot, and buying too early isn't the cheapest either. The truth is that ticket prices are usually about $50 more expensive when they're first released compared to the lowest price.
Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir, revealed: “On average, the best time is 47 days before the flight.” For example, CheapAir observed ticket prices for a flight from Los Angeles to New York. About 320 days before the flight, the price was $357. However, three months before the flight, the price dropped to $318. The price changed a total of 107 times, with the lowest being $290 and the highest $597.
Airlines start reducing ticket prices three months before the flight, and the most favorable time is 47 days away.
Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare and a travel expert, agrees with the three-month rule and advises not to book too early: “Airlines usually don't manage domestic flights until three months before the flight. That's when they start releasing some cheap tickets.”
Therefore, instead of eagerly booking tickets too early for your trip, travelers should wait until the 47th day before the journey to purchase tickets.
