The question of which phone brand is the most durable today is perhaps one that many users are concerned about. Because once you've decided to invest in a smartphone, everyone wants it to be durable, with stable performance and usable for many years.
However, to assess what makes a smartphone durable, it's essential to consider various factors. So, what are those factors? Read this article to find out!
According to the latest 2020 findings from Counterpoint Research on the most trustworthy smartphone brands, HMD Global – the owner of Nokia – tops the list.
Counterpoint Research ranks this list based on four factors: software, security, hardware, and device versatility. These factors are evaluated with different weights and conducted on leading Android smartphones today.

This marks the second consecutive year that Nokia smartphones have topped the global rankings by swiftly delivering software and security updates. Additionally, Nokia leads in hardware quality by implementing more rigorous testing than the industry average.
Peter Richardson, Counterpoint's VP of Research, stated: “The Covid-19 pandemic has led the world to use digital platforms and technology much more extensively than ever before. Smartphones seem to be always active and connected to the internet, inadvertently increasing the number and severity of cyberattacks.”

“These attacks make software and security updates for Android smartphones a crucial aspect. Due to the pandemic, there have been changes in the remote working environment for many. This situation demands the best security solution to safeguard data, to thwart malware, and to prevent things like phishing attacks,” he added.
Counterpoint also assesses that Nokia phones' performance continues to be a competitive advantage compared to other smartphone brands in the Android ecosystem. Up to 98% of Android smartphones are providing software and security updates without consistency, or worse, they aren't providing any updates to enhance security.
OnePlus is also one of the brands quickly updating software and security for its devices, followed by Samsung and Realme.
A chart illustrating software update speeds across various brands' devicesIn a market with numerous smartphone brands like today, companies are striving to differentiate themselves from competitors. From design and hardware to screen size and camera count, much effort is put into creating this differentiation.
Software running on smartphones is also an important factor to consider. Consumers should expect it to be updated regularly to ensure that potential security vulnerabilities are addressed and additional useful features are added.
The frequency of software and security updates on devices from different brandsRitesh Bendre, Counterpoint's Global Content Manager, remarked: “Some brands are actively focusing on updating their products, while others only release software and security updates after a significant delay. Regular software and security updates not only enhance the overall device experience but also help maintain device value over time”
“Surprisingly, 10 leading smartphone manufacturers have no clear strategy to inform customers whether their devices are eligible for software and security updates or not. We believe this issue will become increasingly important as consumers keep their smartphones longer and rely on them more. Nokia and OnePlus devices have performed very well in this regard”
Scorecard comparing Nokia smartphone criteria against the marketTarun Pathak, Counterpoint's Associate Director, commented on the hardware of phones: “Hardware factors are evaluated on several criteria including product durability, impact, drop and shock resistance, wear and tear, thermal testing, moisture and liquid testing, and other factors including qualitative and quantitative observations. We found that Nokia phones undergo more rigorous testing than the industry average. Therefore, when considering factors like timely software and security updates provision, hardware quality, Nokia emerges as the leading brand”
