When Ash arrived in the Hoenn region in the Pokémon animated series, the directors practically overhauled everything around him. New clothes, new teammates, all his Pokémon were left behind - except Pikachu. Even his two companions, Brock and Misty, left. However, Brock returned later, but Misty did not.
In the storyline, the 'mermaid' decided to return to the Cerulean Gym after adventuring with Ash in the Johto region. Brock, on the other hand, was brought back and even accompanied Ash to the Sinnoh region. So why did Misty leave while Brock continued?
Misty and Brock's Different Paths
According to the scriptwriter's explanation, Misty departed from the main story because she needed to. With Misty's older sisters constantly traveling and pursuing their own careers, Cerulean Gym needed someone to step in. Misty ultimately accepted returning to her old job.
If the scriptwriter desired, they could still keep Misty alongside Ash. They could easily introduce another one of Misty's sisters who is less busy to return to Cerulean. To compare, Brock had a brief trip back home, and once everything was settled, he returned to Ash. Ash's two companions had been through a long journey together, yet in the end, this trio still lost one.
May's Introduction Is the Real Reason Misty Had to Leave
According to many, the real reason Misty had to leave was because of May's appearance. Having May from Hoenn not only brought freshness to the character lineup but also helped Ash get acquainted with Pokémon Contests. May is very enthusiastic about these contests, and her presence makes sense.
Certainly, Misty could have filled this role, but it wouldn't have been plausible for the script. She has always aspired to become a Water Pokémon master, so there's no reason for Misty to suddenly change her dreams. Instead, creating a new character would be easier for the scriptwriter.
Brock's Role Differs from Misty's
Within the group, Brock plays a different role. He is seen as an adult figure, taking care of the group, cooking, and handling miscellaneous tasks. Additionally, he acts as a commentator and entertainer during Ash's battles. He also provides Ash with useful information that May may not necessarily provide.
Misty leaving while Brock stays might not please everyone, but it's a significant change for the Pokémon anime. The group has different goals and dreams, so parting ways is reasonable. Ultimately, having Brock stick around longer is good for Ash, not just for storytelling but also for character development.
