A habit computer users should minimize.
If you have the habit of powering off your PC, tablet, laptop, or game console by holding down the power button until the system stops, you should reconsider. This could be one of the causes of trouble with your computer.
Why holding down the power button can cause issues
Simply put, when you hold down the power button, you force the device to switch off abruptly. This forceful shutdown can potentially cause errors in the operating system, especially when background programs or software are still running.
Instead, you should gracefully shut down the device using the options provided by the operating system, or by pressing the power button once (not holding it) to initiate software shutdown or quickly put the device into sleep mode when necessary.

Pressing and holding the power button should only be used in emergency situations.
In the past, most toggle switch designs were physically designed to disconnect power from the device. Flipping or pressing them would interrupt the electrical circuit, thereby stopping the flow of electricity to the device.
Today, most power switches on smart devices like PCs, tablets, smartphones, and game consoles are what engineers call 'soft switches.' When users press them, they send a signal to a smart circuit to initiate the shutdown process, which is often controlled by the operating system.
Sometimes this shutdown process may not work properly, so many soft switches have a backup mode. In such cases, you can press and hold it for a few seconds (instead of tapping quickly) to force the device to shut down. However, as mentioned, this is not the ideal method for regular use — it should only be used for emergencies.
Computers need to be shut down properly.
Modern smart electronic devices contain multiple complex processing systems inside. Therefore, a software-controlled shutdown process is needed to completely stop the device without damaging the file system or the operating system. Sometimes a computer may use flash memory or RAM to temporarily store data or settings in cache memory, and if there is a sudden power loss, the operating system will not be able to safely store that data. Furthermore, forcibly shutting down the power using the physical button can also disrupt the writing process, leading to incomplete or corrupted data, rendering the device unable to operate normally.
What's the ideal machine for you?
Instead of manually pressing and holding the power button to turn off your device, look for options like 'Shut Off,' 'Shut Down,' or 'Power Off' in the operating system. Choosing one of these options will initiate the standard shutdown process, allowing the system to gracefully and safely stop running software.
These days, many PCs will also automatically initiate the shutdown process when users press the power button once. This is also a 'user-friendly' way of shutting down.
When should you only press and hold the power button to turn off your machine?
Sometimes you encounter instances where the device becomes unresponsive, freezes, or the operating system hangs. In such cases, pressing and holding the power button—or simply unplugging the device to cut off power—are useful last-resort solutions. But as mentioned, if you frequently resort to shutting down the machine this way, encountering device errors is only a matter of time.
