The virtual universe Metaverse is destined to shape the future of the gaming sector.
What exactly is the virtual universe Metaverse?
The concept of Metaverse was introduced early in the internet era, initially mentioned in Neil Stephenson's 1992 novel “Snow Crash” and later depicted in Ernest Klein's movie “Ready Player One”. It describes a virtual life within a digital world that exists parallel to the real world outside.

Literally, 'Meta' means 'Beyond' or 'transcending', while 'Verse' is short for 'Universe'. Simply put, the Metaverse can be understood as a concept existing beyond our universe, offering an open world where participants can build and inhabit.
The Metaverse represents a futuristic technological breakthrough, yet its highly innovative and abstract ideas are challenging to define precisely until widely applied. Similar to the 4th industrial revolution technologies like IoT (Internet of Things), cloud computing, or the sharing economy, which are gradually becoming integral to our lives, though not universally understood.
Metaverse and the Gaming Industry
Ernest Cline's novel Ready Player One and its CGI horror film adaptation by Steven Spielberg sketch how video games are paving the way to the creation of the metaverse.
Protagonist Wade lives in a dystopian future plagued by overpopulation, climate change, and more, finding his only escape in the Metaverse. This virtual reality allows him to enjoy life, make great friends, and momentarily forget his real-world struggles.

Video games are often synonymous with entertainment, yet their potential significantly surpasses this notion. They and the digital world can simulate real-world environments and even exceed reality's limits to improve life in various ways.
Game publishers, such as Fortnite's Epic Games, are actively striving to transform their gaming universes into a metaverse.
Originally a battle royale game, Fortnite has expanded to host in-game concerts featuring global stars like Travis Scott and Ariana Grande. Most recently, on August 26, Epic Games partnered with Time Magazine to bring Martin Luther King Jr's historic speech to Fortnite.

Roblox, a leading name in the gaming sector, is fervently working towards creating its own metaverse. For over a decade, their platform has enabled users to construct their digital worlds and interact with friends online. The recent decision by Roblox to go public via an IPO, largely driven by its ambitions towards the metaverse, has catapulted its valuation to over $39 billion.
This demonstrates that pursuing the metaverse likely requires starting within the gaming industry.
