1. What is Wifi 7?
Wifi 7, also known as IEEE 802.11be Extremely High Throughput (EHT), is the upcoming next-generation Wifi standard.
Building upon Wifi 6, Wifi 7 introduces technologies such as 320 MHz bandwidth, Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) 4096, Multi-Resource Unit (RU), Multi-Link Operation (MLO), and Coordinated Multi-Point (CMP). With these advancements, Wifi 7 delivers higher data transmission speeds and lower latency compared to Wifi 6. Wifi 7 is expected to support speeds of up to 30 Gbps, approximately 3 times faster than Wifi 6.
2. How Fast is Wifi 7?
As mentioned by Mytour, theoretically, Wifi 7 can support speeds of up to 30 gigabits per second (Gbps) per access point, three times faster than the maximum speed of 9.6 Gbps of Wifi 6 (also known as 802.11ax).

3. Wifi 7 vs Wifi 6 Comparison
In addition to ultra-fast speeds (theoretically), the Wi-Fi Alliance also plans to introduce some other notable improvements for the latest Wifi standard compared to Wifi 6. Specifically:
- Backward Compatibility: According to the draft specifications of Wifi 7, the next-generation Wifi standard will have backward compatibility with older devices on the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. This means that users do not need to equip new devices or hardware to connect to routers that support Wifi 7.
- 6 GHz Band: The new 6 GHz band (actually 5.925-7.125 GHz) is first supported in Wifi 6E. This band is currently only used by Wifi applications (although other devices may also support it) and its use significantly reduces interference compared to the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands.
- Lower Latency: Similarly, according to the draft specifications of Wifi 7, the new Wifi standard has 'lower latency and higher reliability' for Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). This is also an important factor in replacing wired Ethernet connections.
- MLO: Wifi 7 provides Multi-Link Operation (MLO) with load balancing and channel aggregation features across different frequency bands to deliver better performance. Simply put, Wifi 7 may flexibly utilize all available bands and channels to accelerate connections or avoid bands with high interference.
- Upgrading to 802.11ax: Wifi 7 will offer direct improvements from Wifi 6 technology, including 320 MHz channel width (compared to 160 MHz in Wifi 6), enabling faster connections, and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) 4096 technology allowing for packing more data into each hertz.
4. Which Frequency Band will Wifi 7 Operate on?
Similar to Wifi 6, routers and Wifi clients will operate on the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz wireless bands. The next-generation Wifi standard will provide advanced OFDMA operations using Multiple Resource Unit (MRU) designed to reduce latency and interference. It's worth noting that the number of MU-MIMO streams doubles, reaching a total of 16 streams, resulting in significantly higher overall throughput than Wifi 6.
Additionally, Wifi introduces Multi-Link Operation (MLO) technology that allows devices to simultaneously send and receive data across multiple wireless bands to create a unified connection. This not only provides faster throughput performance but also helps reduce latency and allows data transmission to proceed unimpeded by network traffic or interference.
5. When will Wifi 7 be Released?
Wifi 7 is still undergoing development and refinement. The official technical specifications are expected to be announced in 2024. However, similar to the case of Wifi 6, some routers and devices may be certified and available for purchase earlier, possibly by late 2023.
