History of Wilhelmstein Island Formation
The story of the creation of Wilhelmstein Artificial Island began in 1796. At that time, Count Wilhelmstein von Schaumburg-Lippe ordered the construction of a military fortress in the middle of Lake Steinhuder Meer. And Lake Steinhuder Meer is the largest lake in Northern Germany.
The first military fortress was built on the island
Initially, the military defense complex consisted of 16 islands built on large rocks. To obtain these rocks, local fishermen had to transport them from the mainland to the middle of the lake by boat. After 5 years of continuous effort, a star-shaped fortress was built in the center of the island. In 1771, it became the Military College with the aim of training the next generation of leaders for Germany.

In 1772, Germany's first submarine named Steinhuder Hecht was built directly on Wilhelmstein Island. In 1787, a surprise attack by the Hessian army changed the fate of the island. It was also the first and only time a fierce battle took place on Wilhelmstein Island. However, the siege of the Hessian forces was ultimately successfully repelled, preserving the military strength for Count Wilhelmstein.
Wilhelmstein Island is an attractive tourist destination
By the end of the 18th century, after Wilhelmstein's death, the Military College was also relocated to the mainland. The fortress on Wilhelmstein Island was converted into a prison. In the 19th century, the original 16 islands were merged into a rectangular shape, forming a land area of up to 2,500 square meters.
By 1867, prisoners and soldiers on the island had left Wilhelmstein Island and moved elsewhere. Since then, Wilhelmstein Island has become an attractive tourist destination, attracting tourists from all over the world to visit and relax. In 1974, the first wedding ceremony was held here. This has turned the island into the most romantic wedding venue in Germany.
