HMD Global (the entity licensed to use the Nokia brand for phones and) has recently released its 2023 sustainable development progress report. This report outlines several measures the company has implemented to help protect the environment. In addition to expanding tree planting campaigns, the company is currently integrating the refurbishment of Nokia phones for resale.

Nokia SmartphoneThe push for sustainability has led Nokia to remove certain accessories from the retail boxes of its smartphones and tablets. The charger and wired earphones are the most noticeable omissions, while the brand continues to promote other sustainability initiatives. HMD reports that they have planted over 418,000 trees to date and plan to expand tree planting efforts to other countries. This is part of the collaboration between HMD Global and Ecology.
Will Nokia commence selling refurbished smartphones from H2/2023?Nokia has been honored with several awards including the Ecovardis Platinum Award 2023 for outstanding sustainable activities globally. Repurposing old Nokia phones will enable users to purchase pre-owned devices in the UK and Germany. Nokia also plans to expand the refurbishment program to other markets, providing customers with the opportunity to buy refurbished Nokia phones at a cheaper price.
Furthermore, HMD will also donate returned and refurbished phones to charitable organizations to prevent them from ending up in landfills. The company has donated approximately 700 phones to individuals in need of digital assistance. Additionally, the company has assisted in removing up to 3.5 tons of plastic from rivers.
