Last week, Qualcomm hosted the annual Snapdragon Technology Summit for the second time. After unveiling the first two Windows 10 devices powered by Snapdragon 835 - HP Envy x2 and ASUS NovaGo, the company swiftly announced the next-generation System-on-Chip (SoC) Snapdragon 845.
Windows 10 device with Snapdragon 845 set to make its debut in the latter half of the upcoming year
The first Windows 10 devices using ARM chips are set to be unveiled by the end of the first quarter, coinciding with the Snapdragon 845 launch. Many users wonder why these devices also integrate Snapdragon 835. The simple answer is that x86 emulation on ARM is a new technology developed based on Snapdragon 835.
An important piece of information for users is that Windows 10 ARM does not support faster wireless charging than other devices. So, think carefully before choosing your device.
According to the latest report from Fudzilla, quoting Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm's Vice President, Windows 10 devices with Snapdragon 845 will debut in the latter half of the upcoming year.
This news is not surprising, as the company needs time to prepare for the launch of the new chipset. The good news is that Microsoft has embraced the use of new hardware on Windows Phone and Windows RT.
Note that Snapdragon 835 is used on computers, unlike the version designed for smartphones. Qualcomm has not announced the Snapdragon 845 Mobile PC Platform yet, and Microsoft's Windows Processor Requirement still lists Snapdragon 835 as compatible with the operating system.
One of the significant advantages on ARM computers is the extended battery life. With the big.LITTLE architecture, the chipset can accommodate some high-performance processing cores and some low-performance cores. High-performance cores handle background tasks like synchronizing services while the device is asleep, allowing for longer battery life.
Qualcomm also integrates mobile modems into SoCs, which is why Windows ARM is part of the Always Connected PC. These modems can and are being used in Intel computers, such as the new Surface Pro.
