Despite being around for nearly 2 years, Airpods Pro remains Apple's top-notch choice for earbuds. However, with a price difference of approximately $50, many still ponder over whether to opt for AirPods 2 or Airpods Pro.
Although upgraded, AirPods 2 still stand as a worthy purchase. AirPods gen 2 is already an excellent product. Compared to the 'Pro' version, it offers similar battery life, aesthetically pleasing design, and faster wired charging.
Firstly, AirPods gen 2 will save you up to $50.
This comparison seems somewhat ambiguous because if we take two wireless charging versions across two generations, then with a slew of new features, Apple only 'digs into our pockets' $50 for us to 'treat ourselves'.
But overall, spending over $150 for a pair of wireless earbuds is something to think about.
Some design upgrades on AirPods Pro look really nice, especially the noise-cancellation feature. However, not everyone likes the new design, the in-ear style with such rubber tips may not be comfortable for long-term use, not to mention hygiene concerns.
Wireless charging is convenient, but not quite there yet.
In theory, wireless charging is convenient, but it's often slower than wired charging and devices need to be placed carefully, or they won't charge. Additionally, AirPods with wired charging are very fast, in 30 minutes we can use them for a few hours.
So if you upgrade to AirPods Pro because you feel wireless fast charging is necessary, otherwise, you should buy Gen 2 for savings.
AirPods gen 2 has better battery life.
Both AirPods versions provide you with over 24 hours of battery life with the charging case, but you actually get a slightly longer listening time with AirPods gen 2 - 5 hours versus 4.5 hours with AirPods Pro. Fair to say, the new features added to AirPods Pro, which only reduce continuous usage time by 30 minutes, are commendable.
Continuous usage for 5 hours on AirPods Pro, if you disable new features like active noise cancellation. The AirPods Pro case is larger.
The AirPods gen 1 & 2 case is adorable and compact, easily fitting into cute rubber cases available in the market. Moreover, it effortlessly fits into almost any pocket.
The Pro case is shorter but wider than the gen 2 case and heavier - 1.61 ounces (45 grams) compared to 1.4 ounces (39 grams).
Good noise cancellation feature, but you need to be mindful.
This varies from person to person, some will absolutely love the In-Ear style of AirPods Pro because of its excellent noise-cancellation capability. However, others may find their ears not really comfortable with this feature during long usage.
Active Noise Cancelling headphones can create a private, quiet music space, helping listeners not be bothered by noise from the outside environment. Although the sound quality is not as good as active noise cancelling headphones in the same price range.
I will provide a more detailed analysis of this feature to introduce to you.
In conclusion
If you are someone with a high income, willing to spend on tech products, then go ahead and get yourself a pair of AirPods Pro, truly worth it for the feature upgrades.
Or if your job requires frequent travel, you reside or work in a noisy environment, headphones with active noise cancellation feature will be a valuable companion.
If you're not someone who listens to music often or works in a fairly quiet environment, you may not need active noise cancellation, and you can save yourself $50 by choosing AirPods 2 without wireless charging.
When considering which type of headphones to choose, you need to take into account factors such as preferences, work purposes, needs, and financial conditions.
