Uneditable Word files are a common problem, especially in versions like Word 2016, 2013, 2010, and 2007. Versions 2003 and earlier don't experience this issue, as the feature is not yet developed. Essentially, this is the protected view mode in Word in these versions, and it's activated by default.

Guide to Fix Uneditable Word Files
To resolve the issue of uneditable Word files, it's straightforward. Simply open the file and click on Enable Editing.
Afterward, you can make edits. However, the Protected View feature is entirely manageable, and you can enable or disable it according to your preference.
1. Word File Error: Unable to Edit in Word 2016, 2013
Step 1: To resolve the issue of uneditable Word files, we will take steps to disable Protected View in Word 2016 and 2013. First, click on File.
Step 2: Next, click on Options to access Word Options.
Step 3: Then, go to Trust Center and click on Trust Center Settings.
Step 4: Finally, in Trust Center, simply uncheck all options to disable Protected View in Word 2016, 2013.
2. Word File Error: Unable to Edit in Word 2010, 2007
Step 1: Following a similar approach as mentioned earlier, apply it to Word 2010, 2007 by clicking on the File section in the menu bar.
Step 2: Here, click on Options to access Word Options.
Step 3: Then, go to Trust Center and click on Trust Center Settings.
Step 4: In the Trust Center , simply uncheck all options to disable Protected view in Word 2010, 2007.
Afterward, press OK to complete the process of turning off Protected view. From now on, you won't encounter the issue of Word files being unable to edit. This guide applies to Word 2016, 2013, 2010, and 2007 versions.
You can also apply this method to disable Enable Editing when opening Word, Excel, and other tools in the Office suite. However, note that disabling Enable Editing when opening Word applies only to your computer for all files; on other computers, there may still be the possibility of Word files encountering editing issues due to this error.
