On December 18th, 2018, amidst the bustling city of Hai Phong,
To all of you - the avid readers of this letter,
To my dearest uncle, the one I hold in highest regard,
Perhaps everyone in this world has someone they deeply admire, someone they look up to. I often hear my friends talk about individuals they idolize, be it heroes, superheroes, or those with extraordinary abilities,... Those are the people they consider their heroes. But for me, my hero is not someone like that. My hero possesses no superpowers or superhero strength, yet can do everything in the world for me. My hero is my uncle.
When I was born, I wasn't as fortunate as others to have both parents by my side. I came into this world after my father had passed away, leaving just my mother to shoulder the burden of raising me each day. Every day, my mother had to do a lot of work to earn enough money to support our lives. However, when mentioning the effort of my uncle - my second father - cannot go unnoticed.
My uncle is my father's younger brother, two years younger than my father and the youngest in the family. He has his own family with his wife and two young siblings. His life is also tough, yet he is the one who helps my mother and me through the most difficult and exhausting days.
My family lives in a poor rural area, surrounded year-round by fields, ponds, and seasons of rice, corn, potatoes, and cassava. Life doesn't offer many luxuries like those in the city. Yet, I have everything I need, able to attend school like many others, partly thanks to my uncle. My mother works hard year after year, but it's also very difficult for her to let me go to school. It's my uncle who encourages my mother to let me study, nurturing dreams of a better life within me. He told my mother, 'Only through education can children escape poverty and hardship in the countryside, sister! Let your child go to school.' He's the one who helped me study peacefully until now as he assisted my mother in realizing my dreams.
One might assume that a farmer like my uncle would be rough and only know how to work the fields, but nobody knows that my uncle is an excellent cook and incredibly skilled with his hands. Every meal he cooks is like a sky full of delicious food, with dishes we've never heard of before. One might think a man like my uncle would only know how to cook simple dishes, but my uncle cooks only unique and incredibly delicious dishes, leaving us speechless with admiration. Not only is he a great cook, but my uncle is also extremely skilled with his hands. From sets of tables and chairs, engraved nameplates, or wooden household items,... he can make or fix them easily. My study desk was made by my uncle's own hands. My uncle can do everything from small to big tasks in the house. He's like a superhero with the strength of a superhero.
My uncle has helped my mother and me in many aspects of life. I remember those cold winter mornings, freezing cold, where he would pick me up and take me to school. When I stood behind him, I saw his broad back, large enough to shelter my two sisters and me.
Not only is he someone who helps me in my daily life, but he is also a true father figure to me. He treats me as his own child. He doesn't spoil me but instead, he educates me just like my mother does. I remember one time I argued with my mother, and he was the one who disciplined me. This made me think that I wasn't someone he considered his own, someone he loved. I became distant, difficult, and even more rebellious. It was he who opened up to me about life, about the hardships my mother endured to bring me to where I am today. He also said that hitting me was the last resort when I failed to fulfill my responsibilities. He consistently advised me to become a better, more responsible child in life.
Without a father by my side, one might have thought I would become a difficult child. However, with my uncle, I became a better, more mature child and a good student. He took on the responsibility of teaching me instead of my father, guiding me in every small aspect of life, from how to walk, eat, manners, everything was taught by him.
I may not have remembered much, but I remember vividly the time I fell seriously ill. It was when I had a kidney disease, my body swelling up. My mother was just a weak woman. She was panicked and didn't know what to do for me. In that confusion, he was the one who saved me. He carried me, ran out of the house, put me on his motorcycle, and rushed to the district hospital in the middle of the night. The district hospital is twenty kilometers away from my house, yet he rushed there as if in a race. He carried me into the emergency room and completed all the necessary procedures for me. During the days in the hospital, because the house was far away, my mother was the only one with me, yet he took on the responsibility of commuting, taking care of, and worrying about my mother and me in the hospital until I was able to return home. In my illness, I realized how much he cared for me. He was like my own father. And then, I realized that he was the hero in my heart all along. Despite the hardships and difficulties in life, he has always been by our side, helping my mother and me, caring for me as if I were his own flesh and blood.
If someone were to ask me who the hero in my heart is, I would answer that it's my uncle. A person who is family, a second father who has nurtured me into adulthood. My uncle has always been there for me, from my childhood to my adulthood, never calculating his kindness. I hope my uncle will always remain healthy and be by my side like this.
