STUDY ON THE CONTENT AND ART CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME FAMILIAR FOLKLORE GENRES IN SCHOOL
SUMMARY
Currently, we have been and are learning many works belonging to folklore such as: 'Coconut Shell', 'Tấm Cám',... However, when reading these works, we often only focus on the events in the story and forget about the unique characteristics of the genre. Therefore, through the report 'Study on the content and art characteristics of some familiar folklore genres in school', our group will provide useful knowledge to help people understand better.
I. Overview of folklore
1. Concept of folklore
Folk literature is the creation of a collective, passed down orally. Works of folk literature have been around since ancient times, through countless eras, continuing to exist to this day.
In Vietnam, folk literature is also known by many other names such as: popular literature, oral literature, folk art, folk creation.
2. Genres of folk literature
Through the table above, we can see the richness of genres in folk literature. For our topic, we decided to study the content and art characteristics of: fairy tales (Vietnamese ethnic) and epics.
II. Genre of fairy tales
1. Concept of fairy tales
Fairy tales are folk tales that revolve around the life, fate of various character types such as: heroes, characters with strange talents,... The stories reflect the ancient people's view of life, expressing their longing, dreams of a happy, beautiful life.
2. Content characteristics of fairy tales
Fairy tales mainly reflect the struggles in society. Fairy tales raise issues related to class conflicts. We can encounter this content in some familiar stories like 'Thach Sanh', 'Tam Cam'.
The themes of fairy tales are often very rich. However, the most prominent and familiar theme is still the dream of a just, ideal, happy society, where good triumphs over evil. Stories like 'The Hundred-Knot Bamboo Tree', 'The Clever Kid',... are typical examples.
3. Artistic characteristics of fairy tales
a. Plot
The plot of a fairy tale is constructed in chronological order, what happens first is told first, what happens later is told later. 'The plot develops along a single plot: the main character leads us from one stage to another' ['Vietnamese folklore' (2009), page 335]. For example, in 'Thach Sanh', the main plot of the story develops through the sequential actions of Thach Sanh: his strange birth -> his parents' death, living alone under a tent -> staying at Li Thong's house -> guarding the temple for Li Thong and killing the monster -> killing the eagle, saving the princess and the prince of the Water Fairy King -> being falsely accused of stealing rice -> sitting in prison and playing the lute -> being acquitted and married to the princess by the king -> using the lute to conquer the army of eighteen countries and being passed the throne by his father-in-law.
Additionally, fairy tale plots often have elements of fantasy and wilderness.
b. Characters
Some familiar character types often seen in fairy tales: unfortunate characters, intelligent characters,... Folk authors mainly depict characters through aspects such as: actions, appearance, gestures, words,...
c. Artistic space, time.
Artistic space, time is often vague and unclear. In particular, fairy tales often begin with the time motif 'once upon a time', 'long ago'.
d. Storyteller
First of all, the storyteller is a role created by the author to recount events. In fairy tales, the storyteller is in the third person.

III. Genre of epic poetry
1. Concept of epic poetry
Epic poetry is a long autobiographical genre with a large volume, originating in ancient times.
In the folklore of the ethnic minorities in our country, epic poetry (heroic epic) is one of the prominent genres.
2. Characteristics of the content of epic poetry
The content of epic poetry is very diverse: it tells about the battles to protect society; the wars of liberation to 'avenge father, save mother'; the desire to conquer nature, praise courageous heroes, bravery, etc. In the epic poem 'Dam San', we can see the appearance of these contents. For example, in the excerpt 'Dam San defeats Mtao Mxay', it mentions the battle to save Ho Nhi - Dam San's wife. The excerpt 'Dam San conquers the goddess of the Sun' stands out with two contents: the desire to conquer, expand the boundaries and praise the heroism of the community.
3. Artistic characteristics of epic poetry
a. Plot
The plot usually revolves around significant events related to the fate of a nation or community: wars; conquests, exploration of nature; territorial expansion.
b. Characters
The characters in epics are heroic figures with extraordinary strength, great courage, ready to face dangers. They represent the beauty of character, ideal strength, and common aspirations of the community.
c. Artistic Space and Time
The space of epics is often communal, vast, and majestic. It can be social or natural.
The time of epics is the past, associated with the history of a tribe, a nation.
d. Language of Epics
The language is characterized by its grandeur and rich imagery. Folk authors often use this language to describe the appearance and strength of characters.
Another common feature in epic language is the use of comparison, exaggeration, and emphasis by folk authors to portray and highlight the beauty of characters.
Epic language is also dramatic. This characteristic is often expressed in the form of dialogue between characters.
Epic works always harmoniously combine the language of the narrator and the language of the characters.
IV. Conclusion
The study has provided some key insights into two familiar genres: epic poetry and fairy tales. Hopefully, through this study, you will grasp the characteristics of the content and artistry of these two genres. From there, you will know how to apply them to understanding a similar text.
