Stepping into the main courtyard, I saw rows of stone steles inscribed with the names of distinguished scholars. There's a belief that touching the tortoise heads here brings good luck in studies. So, I made sure to walk around and touch them, much to my parents' amusement. My mom shared some fascinating stories about the eminent scholars honored here, igniting my curiosity even more.

A few days ago, our class organized a field trip to visit the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. This journey left me with many beautiful memories.
In accordance with the initial introduction from our guide, this place was once the political, cultural, and military center of many feudal dynasties in Vietnam. The Thang Long Imperial Citadel consisted of three concentric zones: La Thanh, Hoang Thanh, and Forbidden City. La Thanh was the outermost zone, where the common people resided. Hoang Thanh was where officials and dignitaries worked and lived. The Forbidden City was the innermost zone, heavily guarded and housing the royal court, including the dragon yard, the palace, and the harem of ancient kings. The Thang Long Imperial Citadel today is part of the former Forbidden City. It is a vast historical relic complex, located in the central area of Hanoi city, adjacent to Hoang Dieu and Phan Dinh Phung streets. I've walked along these streets many times, admiring the autumn leaves beside the ancient walls of the citadel, covered in moss, yet I've never actually stepped inside until now.
After gathering at school and setting off, about twenty minutes later, we arrived at the entrance to the historical site. I felt excited and nervous, eagerly waiting to buy tickets to enter. The weather that day was perfect - not too sunny, with a gentle, cool breeze, ideal for a sightseeing trip.
As soon as I passed through the ticket gate, I saw a very spacious courtyard, adorned with many lush green trees. Perhaps this was the royal garden of the past, where kings, queens, and courtiers strolled. Stepping through the majestic gate, I felt as though I was turning back time to the past. The second floor of the gatehouse served as a solemn guard post to protect those within. Just beyond the gatehouse was the Kinh Thien Hall, the grand hall where the king and officials held state meetings. Although there are not many traces left here, some decorative motifs and ancient palace tiles remain. Inside, there is a courtyard with separate palaces. The palaces have been renovated, rebuilt entirely, yet they retain their original positions and ancient architecture. The ceiling is supported by sturdy red wooden columns. The columns are intricately carved and gilded with gold leaf. The walls are adorned with many paintings, depicting mythical creatures like dragons, phoenixes, fairies, and lotus flowers. Here, I suddenly felt the grandeur, elegance, and magnificence.
Outside the historical site, within the Imperial Citadel, there's also a small museum. This is where artifacts related to the ancient court and kings are displayed or reconstructed. I was extremely surprised by the intricacy of the decorative details and the beauty of the pottery and tea bowls preserved here. It's evident that the craftsmanship in Dai Viet, our ancient country, was highly advanced. Everything from the tiled roofs, decorative bricks to tea pots, and water jars resembled works of art, some dating back hundreds of years.
What surprised me the most when visiting the Thang Long Imperial Citadel was a secret military command bunker buried underground. It turns out, during the war, this place was chosen by our state as a base. Its full name is the T1 combat command bunker. Below the bunker are workrooms, decontamination rooms, and poison gas shelters. Today, the historical site still retains desks, hand-drawn maps, landline phones, radar signal detectors, and notably, I even got to see the alert for incoming American planes. At that moment, my whole body tingled with excitement, feeling like I was truly a soldier in the battle.
After about three hours of exploration, our class had thoroughly discovered the Imperial Citadel. This could be considered the most meaningful and exciting field trip our class has ever organized. Not only did we gain a deeper understanding of the feudal history of Vietnam, but we also learned more about the nation's resistance war against America to save the country. In the future, I will definitely recommend Hoang Thanh Thang Long to friends and family for a visit.
