Xiaomi Mimix 4 Hands-on: Seamless Display Thanks to Under-Screen Selfie Camera
Buzz
Mi Mix has always been known for its sexy and impressive design, and Mi Mix 4 is no exception. We still have a phone with the highlight being the practically invisible selfie camera hidden beneath the screen, making it smooth, sleek, and very seamless. The camera cluster stands out as a noteworthy feature contributing to the recognition prowess of this device, alongside top-notch specs currently available and fast charging technology up to 120W for this device. The first notable feature on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is the under-display camera system. Unlike ZTE Axon or Z Fold3, Xiaomi has opted for a quite different approach to equip the Mi Mix 4 with an under-display camera. The Mi Mix 4 features a 6.67-inch display, with a pixel arrangement on the screen called CUP (Camera Under Panel) by Xiaomi, essentially arranging pixels around the camera cluster under the screen, combined with pixel arrangement on the surface of this camera cluster, resulting in an almost invisible camera cluster truly beneath the screen. During usage, it's challenging to perceive this camera, even when turning the device on/off, watching videos, viewing photos, browsing the web, in various screen brightness levels...Certainly, nothing is flawless, and with a camera cluster hidden beneath the screen like this, it somewhat diminishes the quality of selfie photos significantly. The quality of selfie photos obtained is not truly sharp, appearing somewhat dull in color compared to other conventional selfie cameras. The selfie photos will still undergo post-processing by the device to enhance sharpness, but the quality still doesn't match up to other conventional selfie cameras. To take selfies with the Mi Mix 4, perhaps one should consider having good lighting conditions or supplementary light to potentially improve the photo quality.Another issue with the under-display camera cluster of the Mi Mix 4 is that during video calls, depending on whether the video call app allows for post-processing or not, it will determine the image quality of that video call, whether it's clear and smooth or not.The Mi Mix 4's display has a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, along with a 420Hz HDR touch sampling rate. Besides being equipped with a seamlessly integrated screen with the under-display camera, the two side bezels of the screen are also designed quite slim, giving the screen a more borderless feel, looking sexier and much improved. The second notable feature of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is its charging speed. The device is equipped with a 4500mAh battery, supporting 120W charging technology - this charging speed is almost at the top in the current Android smartphone world. With this charging speed, just plug in the cable, and the device will be charged from 0% to 100% in just 16 minutes - an incredibly fast charging speed. Additionally, the Mi Mix 4 also supports wireless charging technology up to 50W.The Mi Mix 4 is designed with a glossy back, looking very attractive. But of course, with this back design, the device will be prone to fingerprints, requiring users to be diligent in cleaning the device more frequently to keep it in the best condition. The Mi Mix 4 comes in two versions, black and white, with a prominent rear camera cluster, including a 108MP camera. The design of this camera might remind you of a GoPro lens, with the arrangement of cameras forming a protruding cluster that is square to the surface of the device's back. With this camera cluster setup, it will be quite challenging to clean, especially when dust gets into the squared corner area between the back surface and the camera cluster. The bottom edge of the device is equipped with a USB-C port, along with speaker grilles and a SIM tray. The top edge is equipped with a mic cluster, and right beside it is engraved with the harman/kardon branding. The outer material of the Mi Mix 4 is made from ceramic material, helping to significantly reduce the weight of the device, and I feel the device is much lighter compared to the Mi 11 Ultra. The Mi Mix 4 is equipped with the Snapdragon 888+ chip, with the pre-installed interface being MIUI 12.
