About a month and a half ago, Yahoo! announced the immediate shutdown of Yahoo Messenger on 17/7.
In their support post, Yahoo stated that the company will cease support for Yahoo Messenger after 17/7. This means that after 17/7, the service will no longer be operational, and users will be unable to access their chat histories.
Yahoo Messenger officially bids farewell
Upon visiting the Yahoo Messenger homepage, users will receive a notification stating that the service has officially shut down as of 17/7/2018. It suggests users switch to alternative messaging services such as Facebook Messenger, Viber, Telegram, Line, Skype, and many others.
Users have an additional 6 months to download their chat history.
Users will have an additional 6 months to download their chat history, Yahoo Messenger messages to their computer or other devices, starting from today, 17/7.
To download your chat history, Yahoo Messenger messages, first you need to visit the download request page, log in with your Yahoo ID, choose a verification method, then download the stored conversations. Yahoo! will send you messages, chat history to the email address you provide.
Will Yahoo Squirrel soon replace Yahoo Messenger?
Currently, Yahoo! hasn't introduced any app to replace Yahoo Messenger. Not long ago, the company launched a new group chat app called Yahoo Squirrel, promising to compete with other messaging platforms in the market.
Yahoo Squirrel is a group chat app, only for invited users. The app is currently available in beta version for the Android and iOS mobile ecosystem. Additionally, the company hasn't disclosed any further information about the official release date of the app.
