Yersin Museum Nha Trang – A Historical and Cultural Landmark Celebrating a Visionary
You probably know the streets named Yersin, but who is this familiar name, and why is it given to many streets and even a museum?

Alexandre Esmile Jean Yersin, known as Yersin, was a French-Swiss medical doctor, bacteriologist, and explorer. He is credited with discovering the Lam Vien plateau and founding the precursor to Hanoi Medical University, Dong Duong Medical School.

Yersin also researched and identified the bacterium causing the plague, making significant contributions to finding ways to treat the dreaded disease at that time. During his exploration and medical mission, he chose to stay in this land of Nha Trang to live and treat the impoverished. In 1943, he passed away in this piece of Nha Trang.

To honor his significant contributions to medical exploration in Vietnam and globally, Nha Trang established the Yersin Museum in 1997 within the premises of the Pasteur Institute Nha Trang. It serves as a tribute, preserving many artifacts and tools used by Yersin for work and research.

The Yersin Museum is currently situated on the second floor of the house within the Pasteur Institute Nha Trang, at 10 Tran Phu, Nha Trang city. This room, approximately 100 square meters, houses over 1,200 books and more than 50 items Yersin used in his research in fields such as medicine, astronomy, and geography.

You'll be surprised witnessing firsthand the research tools, various ancient equipment, and items from Yersin, including his antique Leroy watch, archival articles, Morse code signal antennas, computers, globes, electrical measuring instruments, telescopes, and other unique laboratory tools. This attests to Yersin's intellect and passion for scientific research.

After visiting the Yersin Museum, you'll feel admiration and gain a deeper understanding of the life of this brilliant physician. Don't forget to stop and visit his grave at Suoi Dau to express gratitude for his immense contributions. The museum is open from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 12 pm, and from 2 pm to 4:30 pm.
