YouTube is rumored to be developing a short video feature to compete with TikTok called Shorts. Currently, the online video giant seems to be taking the first steps in this project. According to YouTube's testing support page, the company has begun testing a feature that will allow users to record multiple segments in 15 seconds.
What does multi-segment video mean? If you've used TikTok before, you'll know that you need to press and hold the record button to create a video. You release your finger to stop recording whenever you want. Now, if you haven't recorded enough for 15 seconds, you can touch the record button again to continue recording. You can repeat this process and record multiple segments until you have a satisfactory 15-second clip.

You've probably seen jump cuts in TikTok or Instagram Reels videos - TikTok's counterpart that allows for 15-second videos as well. This is achieved through this multi-segment feature. YouTube is currently rolling out this feature on its mobile app. It will combine multiple segments and upload the video as a single clip.
How to test the multi-segment video feature? If you're lucky enough to access this testing feature, you'll see the option to Create a video below the video upload section in the YouTube app on mobile platforms. It will appear alongside the existing Record and Go Live buttons.
To record a video clip, the support page reiterates that you need to 'tap or hold the record button to record the first clip, then tap again or release to stop recording that clip'. It will be interesting to see what new video editing tools Google will bring and whether they will make the platform's music library available for use with this feature.
The multi-segment video recording feature will reach a limited number of YouTube creators at this time. The support page states: 'We are starting these tests on mobile platforms (both iOS and Android) with a small group of users while collecting feedback'. After these videos are uploaded, users can still download YouTube videos to their devices as usual.
