Yushima Island: A Tale of Historical Significance
Yushima Island, also known as Dango Jima, holds a significant place in Japanese history during the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion under the Tokugawa Shogunate. This uprising was led by a group of Catholic peasants from Shimabara (Nagasaki Prefecture) and Amakusa (Kumamoto Prefecture). The main objective was to protest against exorbitant taxes imposed on the residents of these regions. Due to its secluded location between the two provinces, Yushima was often used as a clandestine meeting point to discuss the group's strategic plans. Today, the island has transformed into a bustling hub, attracting tourists from all corners of the globe who visit the southern prefectures of Japan.

Half of the 'residents' on the island are cats, so visitors can encounter these animals everywhere they go. From narrow village alleys to the fishing boats docked by the shore when not out at sea, the distinctive figures of these 'four-legged residents' can be spotted everywhere. Most of the cats on the island are native Japanese cats with a variety of fur colors and sizes, both cute and charming. As if knowing they are the masters of this island, the cats can be seen lounging on the grass, playing under the shade of trees, or strolling along the beach.
The cats here are extremely friendly with the villagers and visitors. Every time a ferry arrives, the cats immediately 'welcome' the passengers. It seems like they are accustomed to the care and pampering of the islanders, as they are very affectionate, even to first-time visitors. Instead of running away, the cats will actively approach and snuggle up to visitors, seeking food and enjoying gentle strokes of their soft fur. The close bond between humans and cats creates a tranquil and warm atmosphere for this small island.

Visitors and islanders mainly travel on foot, allowing the cats to roam freely or nap in the middle of the road without worrying about traffic accidents. According to what I read on the signposts on the island, all the cats here are nurtured and cared for by the villagers, so although they are free to wander outside, none of them are considered 'feral cats'.
A tranquil scene of the simple village with a cat lounging comfortably in the middle of the roadStepping onto the island feels like entering a movie set in a small fishing village where humans and cats harmonize with nature. Time seems to slow down here, synchronized with the gentle pace of the cats and the warm smiles of the islanders. Surely, the peaceful rhythm of life here will make any visitor feel much lighter and more comfortable. Let's admire some adorable snapshots of our four-legged friends on Yushima Island.

The entire space of Yushima Island is always filled with the fresh green color of grass and trees, hiding within it are simple yet peaceful little houses. The islanders are all incredibly friendly. They always smile when they see tourists, as if welcoming back a long-lost friend returning to the village. Being a seaside village, the main livelihood of the people on this island is fishing, which also provides abundant food for the cats here.

It is a centuries-old cherry blossom tree, forming a gigantic heart-shaped canopy. It is believed that couples visiting the island and taking photos under this tree will live happily ever after.

In the Japanese belief, cats are skilled fish catchers, so keeping cats, worshipping the Cat Deity, or displaying cat-shaped symbols at ports and fishing villages will help fishermen catch more fish. In daily life, the image of a cat is considered a symbol of bringing luck and prosperity to the Japanese people.
If you have time, you can also explore other attractions on the island such as the Suwa Shrine, Mine Park, Yushima Lighthouse, and especially take photos with the giant cat statue on the island. Although there are no convenience stores on this island, there are food stalls, small eateries, and guesthouses where tourists can take a rest. Regarding cuisine, Yushima Island is also famous for dishes made from turnips and fresh seafood, especially Japanese Red Snapper (known as Tai fish in Japanese), so if you have the chance, experience the distinctive cuisine of this island.
