The release notes for this update explain that Zoom will introduce a dedicated installer for installing the video calling app on Macbooks with Apple Silicon chips.
- Apple Silicon Processor Support: The Zoom application on computers will provide better support for devices with ARM CPUs. A dedicated installer is available for download in the Zoom Download Center.
Zoom officially embraces Macbooks powered by the M1 chip
Given the surge in Zoom usage this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this update stands out for Mac users. While initial signs indicated that the Intel version of Zoom performed quite well on M1 Macs even under Rosetta 2 emulation, this new update will further optimize Zoom for Apple's latest M1-powered machines.
A performance and battery life test reveals that the Zoom app, not optimized for the M1 chip, consumes minimal battery on M1 Macs, with only a 17% decrease in battery life after a 2.5-hour video call. However, the M1-optimized Zoom app could significantly enhance battery life while improving overall performance when running Zoom alongside other applications.
This update also enhances nonverbal feedback, allowing users to send text messages on mobile devices (with Zoom Phone Pro). It can be said that M1 support is the most noteworthy upgrade if you're using one of Apple's latest computer models to stay connected during the ongoing pandemic.
