Zoom introduced real-time translation capabilities on Monday at the annual Zoomtopia event, developed to help users overcome language barriers in video calls. In a demo, Zoom employees spoke in English and the video conferencing app translated in real-time to Japanese and Chinese. Another employee then spoke in German, and the app translated the source language to English.
Zoom adds support for 12 new languages for translation
This technology utilizes algorithms supported by AI to transcribe spoken words into text. Subsequently, Zoom employs machine translation programs to translate the text into other languages.

The real-time translation feature comes from a German startup called Kites, which Zoom acquired in June of this year. Zoom has not provided specific information about the 12 languages the feature will support, but English, Japanese, Portuguese, German, Chinese, and Korean were introduced in the demo. Furthermore, the company has yet to disclose whether this will be a free or paid feature.
According to Mytour, Zoom plans to begin testing and releasing the real-time translation feature in 2022.
In addition, Zoom has expanded the list of languages supported by its automatic transcription feature to a staggering 30. Another notable feature coming soon to Zoom is Whiteboard, allowing users to jot down notes, draw diagrams, or sketch on a virtual whiteboard. The company stated: 'Zoom Whiteboard is scheduled to launch by the end of this year, enabling users to collaborate seamlessly, asynchronously across multiple devices, while providing a more immersive online meeting experience. You will be able to interact with a virtual whiteboard just as if you were doing it in person. We are also collaborating with Oculus from Facebook to integrate Zoom Whiteboard into Oculus Horizons Workrooms, allowing users to easily access and annotate on a whiteboard in a virtual reality environment.'
