A common question asked by both tourists and locals is, 'What's good for breakfast in Da Nang?' and 'Where should I go to eat?' This article will answer those questions for you!

Da Nang is not only a haven for street food but also offers a wide range of breakfast options!
1. Sticky Rice
For a long time, Xôi has been deeply ingrained in the memories of Da Nang residents, especially since their elementary and middle school days. Every morning before heading to school, two types of 'fast food' were always available: xôi and bánh mì. Right outside the school gates, you'd always find two pushcarts parked proudly on either side, almost daring students: 'You can’t enter class without buying a ticket... and that ticket is xôi!'

This is a full meal perfect for breakfast.
Xôi gà is often the top choice, especially on cold days when a hot plate of this dish just feels perfect. The sticky rice is soft, fragrant, and infused with the scent of fresh, steamed glutinous rice, often cooked with coconut milk if you find a top-tier xôi vendor. If not, most will drizzle it with the bright yellow hue of fresh turmeric juice. The chicken is boiled, shredded, and mixed with lime, onion slices, and a sprinkle of rau răm for that tantalizing aroma. If you're a fan of crispy chicken skin, don't forget to ask the vendor to add extra skin; it’s wonderfully crispy, chewy, and with a touch of salt and pepper, it’s simply divine.
An interesting feature of Da Nang's xôi gà is the addition of fried shallots that complement the dish perfectly. Fresh green onion strands are soaked in sizzling oil, cooled down, and served with crispy pork fat. This mixture is then generously poured over the steaming hot plate of golden xôi, making the whole dish mouthwatering. The feeling it brings is simply indescribable!
2. Bánh Mỳ
Bánh mỳ is a popular quick meal not only among children but also adults. Office workers, especially those in a rush, often don’t have time for breakfast or coffee. All they need to do is grab a takeaway coffee from a nearby shop and then swing by the bánh mỳ stand right next door. There, they can pick up a fully-loaded pork and meatball sandwich, providing enough nutrition for the entire morning.

It may look small, but it packs quite the punch.
The bánh mì with pork and meatballs sounds simple, but no two sandwiches in Da Nang are the same. The ingredients—cold cuts, sliced meatballs, cucumber, cilantro, pâté, butter sauce, and chili—are constant, but each vendor brings their own unique touch. For example, at Mrs. Bê's shop, you’ll get extra homemade pâté that rivals the best in town. If you happen to stop by when Sister Mùi is in a good mood, she might throw in a few thicker slices of cold cuts. Meanwhile, Ms. Mơ, at the corner shop, is famous for her rich, glossy butter sauce made with chicken fat that has customers coming back for more.

4. Bánh Canh

The bowl of bánh canh with its vibrant colors is truly mouthwatering!
Unlike the dish called 'cháo bột' found in many other places, Bánh canh 'made in' Da Nang comes in versions made not only from tapioca flour and wheat flour but also from the traditional rice flour. One of the standout versions is the bánh canh cá lóc, which has a distinctive flavor inspired by the ancient capital of Huế, with a spicy kick from dried chili powder and firm, flavorful fish slices that leave a lasting taste. Another version is bánh canh xương chả, a Da Nang twist with crispy fried fish cakes sliced into strips, added to a steaming bowl of bánh canh, topped with a dash of black pepper. If you're feeling fancy, you can even add an oxtail to dip into some tangy, salty dipping sauce. Sometimes, all you need is a simple loaf of bánh mỳ to dip into the savory broth, filling you up for your morning commute.
5. Mỳ Quảng
Mentioning Mỳ Quảng brings a flood of emotions. I used to love it more than anything else, to the point where having Mỳ Quảng three times a day instead of rice was completely normal. I've 'invested' more in my favorite Mỳ Quảng shop than in visiting my own lover. While others may declare their love a million times, for me, it's a constant dedication of 84,000 VND every week for Mỳ Quảng. I can’t quite explain why this humble dish has such a magnetic pull.

In a bowl of Mỳ Quảng with shrimp, sometimes you'll find just a few shrimp carefully 'stir-fried' until their shells soften and become as delicate as paper. The shrimp meat soaks in the flavor, turning a rich, reddish-orange color, which truly excites the taste buds.

The shrimp, after being stir-fried, takes on a wonderfully rich flavor.
There are several variations of Mỳ Quảng that you can try, including Mỳ Gà, Mỳ Bò, or Mỳ Cá Lóc, depending on your taste. For Mỳ Gà, the chicken is free-range, which makes the meat firm and flavorful. It's sliced to the perfect size, then 'rimmed' so that each piece absorbs the seasoning, giving it a satisfying crunch and chew. Mỳ Cá Lóc is a particularly unique variation, as strong spices like lemongrass, onions, and ginger are added to the broth, warming you up and banishing the morning chill.
