Lưu Văn Liệt High School was founded on December 2, 1949, and officially established on December 8, 1948, under the name Collège de Vinh Long (Vinh Long Primary School). On September 24, 1954, the school was upgraded to a first-level secondary school and renamed Nguyễn Thông Secondary School. On February 14, 1958, Decree No. 249GD/NĐ recognized it as a second-level secondary school. On January 23, 1961, the school was renamed Tống Phước Hiệp Secondary School. Following the reunification on April 30, 1975, the school became Vĩnh Long Town High School. In 1979, the school adopted its current name, Lưu Văn Liệt High School, in honor of a local war hero who fought in the anti-American resistance.
