Inspired by the idea of constructing a home using traditional local materials, a family residing on An Binh Islet has created a unique house made entirely from 4000 coconut trees.
The Unique House Crafted from 4000 Coconut Trees

The house made from 4000 coconut trees was completed in 2019 and opened to visitors in 2021. This project was a decade-long dream of Mr. Duong Van Thuong and Mrs. Nguyen Ngoc Giac. Located on An Binh Islet in Hoa Quy Hamlet, Hoa Ninh Commune, Long Ho District, the house spans an area of 8 hectares. Today, it serves as both a tourist attraction and an overnight stay for visitors.

The entire structure of the coconut house is built using nearly 4,000 coconut trees. Specifically, the main house, featuring three compartments and two lean-tos in traditional Southern Vietnamese architectural style, required 1,700 trees. To source the materials, the homeowners traveled far and wide to find coconut trees aged 80 to 100 years with straight, durable, and sturdy trunks. The coconut wood was soaked in water for a year and then treated with anti-termite chemicals to enhance its durability. The cutting and shaping of the coconut trunks were done entirely by hand. To obtain a 4-meter vertical column, the coconut tree needed to be at least 10 meters tall.

As a result, each column in the house is made from a century-old coconut tree. Except for the tiled roof, every element in the house made from 4000 coconut trees utilizes other parts of the coconut tree. The altar cabinet, horizontal lacquered board, parallel sentences, and even the furniture are crafted from coconut wood, adorned with coconut inlays instead of the traditional mother-of-pearl. Coconut husks are used to make swings, while coconut shells are turned into lamps and decorative items. The three statues of Phuc – Loc – Tho are also intricately carved from coconut wood.
