The live performance 'Chuyện phố Hàng'

'Chuyện phố Hàng' is produced by the Hoan Kiem Lake Management Board and the Hanoi Old Quarter, in collaboration with artists from the Youth Theater. Inspired by real-life stories and images from the family behind the show, it focuses on a middle-class family with a long-standing tradition in Chinese medicine. The show takes place in a 130-year-old house, leading visitors from one surprise to the next.

'Chuyện phố Hàng' is part of a series of performances in Hanoi's Old Quarter, aimed at preserving and enhancing the heritage of the area, thereby boosting tourism. The Old Quarter is a hub of traditional craft streets, alongside buildings that are deeply connected to the thousand-year history of Thang Long. The area is home to a rich and diverse array of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

Intangible cultural heritage values such as daily life, spiritual existence, and traditions must be preserved and developed. Therefore, 'Chuyện phố Hàng' captures a glimpse of these values. Audiences will gain a fresh perspective and new experiences from the fusion of culture and art. The entire performance incorporates various artistic elements such as physical theater, mime, shadow puppetry, and traditional dance.

A snapshot of ancient Hanoi brought to life.
The play centers around a family running a traditional herbal medicine shop. It includes the uncle and aunt (terms used for parents in the middle class of old times), the Western-educated son, and the household staff. The son, initially reluctant to follow in the family's footsteps, changes his mind after seeing a young woman seek treatment at the shop. He becomes determined to create a remedy combining Eastern and Western medicine to save her, leading him to a deeper appreciation for his family's medical heritage.

Various forms of art, combined with sound and light effects, work together to transport the audience back in time. The senses are also awakened through the scent of fragrant medicinal herbs, the visual experience of the play, and the refreshing taste of lotus tea throughout the performance.

'Chuyện phố Hàng' is a meaningful show that takes you back to ancient times, offering a chance to understand the long-standing traditions and culture of our ancestors.
