The Cosmonautics Museum is a significant site showcasing the space science achievements of the Soviet Union and Russia. It is an essential stop for anyone touring Russia.
Cosmonautics Museum

When you travel through Russia, make sure to stop by the Cosmonautics Museum (Museum of Cosmonautics). This historical science museum, one of the largest in the world, lies beneath the Monument to the Conquerors of Space. It displays Russia's major space accomplishments, from space suits to Earth's first artificial satellite, and even the spacecraft tasked with exploring the Moon and the Solar System.

The museum officially opened its doors to the public on April 10, 1981, marking the 20th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's historic manned spaceflight. Visitors can also view personal items of famous astronauts, historical documents, and photographs.

After its renovation, the museum’s floor area increased nearly fourfold. Therefore, it's recommended to dedicate an entire day to explore when you visit Russia. Upon entering, you will feel as though you've been launched into space. The ticket counter and coat room are modeled after the Buran spacecraft, and near the entrance, AR machines invite you to embark on a space journey. There are also vending machines offering space food in sealed tubes.

One of the permanent exhibitions at the museum is titled 'Dawn of the Space Age.' It showcases models of satellites, the first space station, and the spacesuit worn by the first man to journey into space. The exhibit also features mannequins of Belka and Strelka, the Soviet space dogs, as well as a mobile sea station used for operating satellites.

The museum also contains the main body of a spacecraft. Next, visitors can enter a cinema that plays space-themed documentaries. Additionally, the exhibition includes the workspace of rocket engineer Sergei Korolev, along with his personal items, blueprints, and equipment. The museum's central area displays a full-sized rocket that was launched into space in 1933.

One of the museum’s halls is designed to resemble a spacecraft. This is a replica of the core of the Mir space station, which was dropped into the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors to Russia can step inside to experience the space environment and view a model of Earth. Another captivating feature is the museum's mission control center, where you can monitor the real-time orbital activities of the International Space Station crew.

The Cosmonautics Museum underwent significant renovation and expansion, reopening in 2009 with more modern exhibitions. It has since become one of the leading space exploration museums in the world. The museum also serves as a source of inspiration and education, attracting visitors from all over the globe.
