Nestled within the untouched beauty of nature, with its distinctive exterior shape, the Eye of the Mountain has become an ideal destination for those who love adventure travel and nature experiences.
The Eye of the Mountain – a unique natural wonder
The Eye of the Mountain is located in the valley of Ban Danh village, Quoc Toan commune, Tra Linh district, Cao Bang province. The mountain is locally referred to as “Thung Mountain.” Near its peak, there is a large circular cave resembling an eye. This round cave has a diameter of over 50 meters and is situated about 50 meters above the surface of Thang Hen Lake.

In the local Tay language, the Eye of the Mountain is called “Phja Piót,” which translates to a mountain with a hole, pierced through as if to let the wind blow freely from one side to the other. This mountain lies entirely within the valley of the Thang Hen Lake complex, part of the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark. The scenery is lush and serene, with vast grasslands stretching alongside the blue waters of the lakes.

The ideal time to explore the Eye of the Mountain
The mountain retains its natural beauty year-round, attracting tourists in general and adventurers in particular. Therefore, you can explore this place at any time of the year. However, the ideal period is during September and October (the dry season). At this time, the water in Thang Hen Lake often recedes for several hours, revealing the enchanting and poetic scenery of Nam Tra Waterfall. Visitors can hike and enjoy a more immersive experience.

Traveling to the Eye of the Mountain
The Eye of the Mountain is approximately 50km from Cao Bang city. Travelers can conveniently reach the destination by car or motorbike. However, motorbikes are the preferred mode of transportation. The final stretch leading to the mountain is quite narrow, and only motorbikes can navigate deep into the valley.

To reach this mountain, you can follow this route: National Highway 3 (12 km) – Ma Phuc Pass – Provincial Road 205 (heading to Tra Linh for about 7 km) – Thang Hen Lake – Ban Danh village – Quoc Toan commune. Then, turn onto the trail at the foot of the mountain and walk an additional 1.5 km to reach the Eye of the Mountain area.
