The Unique Guoliang Stone Village
Located deep within the Taihang Mountains in Henan Province, China, Guoliang village is a remarkable stone settlement. Tourists eager to visit Guoliang village must navigate a narrow, slippery road that winds along a sheer cliff face at an altitude of 1,752 meters. Because of this, Guoliang is often called the 'village in the sky,' a mystical and remote place. Additionally, the Guoliang Tunnel, which cuts through the mountain to the village, is ranked among the most dangerous destinations in the world. Despite the risks, this treacherous route draws many international tourists eager to explore and experience its allure.
Before the Guoliang Tunnel was completed, the village was nearly completely isolated due to its rugged mountainous terrain. With a population of just over 300 people, the Chinese government was unwilling to invest millions of dollars in a road solely for the village’s use. As a result, Guoliang was nearly forgotten, and the village became virtually uninhabited. Faced with these hardships, 13 local workers took it upon themselves to dig a tunnel through the Taihang Mountain so the villagers could trade with the outside world. They worked tirelessly for five years, carving out a tunnel 1,250 meters long, 5 meters high, and 4 meters wide, allowing vehicles to pass. However, the process was not without tragedy, as five workers lost their lives due to the lack of experience with explosives. The tunnel was finally completed on May 1, 1977, a monumental achievement that cost the lives, sweat, and blood of the villagers.

Upon arrival, tourists are often astounded by the entire village, which is constructed entirely of stone, including everyday items such as tables, chairs, and cooking utensils. The residents of Guoliang are warm and welcoming, always eager to greet visitors. Tourists can't help but marvel at the village's breathtaking beauty, set at over 1,700 meters above sea level, where the fresh air, majestic scenery, and tranquil atmosphere offer the perfect place for relaxation. In recent years, as Chinese tourism has surged, more and more travelers have flocked to the village, helping to improve the living standards of the locals. Visitors can also indulge in delicious local dishes such as wild mushrooms, mountain vegetables, fresh bamboo shoots, and game meat.
To travel to Guoliang, visitors should start from Xinxiang city in Henan Province. Drive north on Huanyu Avenue for 20 km until reaching Huixian town. The road is quite accessible, so visitors can easily drive on their own. In Huixian, continue straight until reaching the intersection of S229 and S228, then turn left towards Nanzhaizen village. From there, it's a quick 13 km drive to Guoliang village.
