On the morning of August 5, Cambodia held a groundbreaking ceremony to officially commence the construction of the Funan Techo Canal.
LOCATION OF THE CANAL
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Funan Techo Canal took place in Prek Takeo village, Samrong Thom commune, Kean Svay district, Kandal province. This area is approximately 35km from the center of Phnom Penh and marks the starting point of the future Funan Techo Canal.

PROJECT DETAILS
According to the plan, the Funan Techo Canal will have a width of 100m at the upstream, 80m at the downstream, and a depth of 5.4m. The canal will stretch approximately 180km from Phnom Penh to Cambodia's coastal Kep province.

The canal will pass through four provinces, including Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep, with a total population of 1.6 million people residing along its banks.


PROJECT PURPOSE
The Funan Techo Canal will enhance market competitiveness for goods by reducing transportation costs. The project also serves as an irrigation system in southwestern Cambodia.

The construction cost is estimated at approximately $1.7 billion and is expected to be completed by 2028. This is a historic project for Cambodia.
