From Tuy Hòa city in Phú Yên, a 20-minute drive along the coastal road will lead you to An Hải commune. From there, you can spot Cù Lao Mái Nhà from afar, with its stunning white sand beaches. The island is still relatively pristine, and its tranquil, rustic beauty attracts many visitors.

Although not far from the mainland, boats only operate to the island from April to August, during the calm sea months. The corals here are a vibrant spectrum of colors, with soft, delicate new coral formations glistening like snowflakes. This is one of the regions with the most diverse coral reefs in the entire country. A visit here would not be complete without diving into the ocean to fully appreciate the island’s beauty. The deeper you dive, the more spectacular the vibrant underwater world becomes. The waters around Cu Lao Mai Nha are also home to many rare marine species, such as abalones, groupers, oysters, lobsters, crabs, and the prized huỳnh đế crabs.

Discovering the island
Visitors often enjoy setting up a delicious feast under the cool shade of the casuarina trees. Cu Lao can be visited for a day or for an overnight camping trip, allowing guests to enjoy both the sunrise and sunset at the front and rear beaches. The front beach has some temporary tents set up by local residents, making it convenient for travel and meal preparation. This area is also sheltered from the wind, making it ideal for setting up camp and starting a fire.

The rear beach offers a pristine landscape of large rocky outcrops and towering cliffs, perfect for watching the sunset and sunrise. Near the sea, there are natural freshwater pools, formed in the depressions of large rocks as the tide recedes. These crystal-clear pools create a unique and picturesque swimming experience. Visitors can also trek up the rocky peaks of the island and enjoy activities like shell collecting and fishing with the locals.

When you head to the island, you can purchase a 20-liter water bottle for 50,000 VND. Local markets don’t operate every day, so it’s advisable to bring your own food. There is no electricity on Cu Lao Mai Nha, so it’s essential to bring along batteries or a portable charger. Especially, check the weather forecast before your trip, as even during the beautiful season, rough seas and high waves can still occur.
