The Doi Pagoda in Soc Trang is famous for its unique Khmer architecture and the thousands of bats that live within its grounds.
About Doi Pagoda in Soc Trang
Doi Pagoda is located in Soc Trang city, Soc Trang province. The temple was originally built in 1569 as a small structure made of bamboo and leaves. With its distinct Khmer architectural style, Doi Pagoda stands out as one of the most significant temples in the Mekong Delta. Today, the pagoda not only serves as a place for worship and community activities but also attracts numerous visitors.

In 2008, a devastating fire broke out at Doi Pagoda, destroying the main hall. The local authorities and residents came together to rebuild and restore the temple to its original state.
In 2013, the Doi Pagoda tourist area opened to the public. The surrounding areas now feature parking lots and electric carts for visitors to easily explore and visit the temple.

Why is it called Doi Pagoda?
The pagoda is named Doi Pagoda because, for years, tens of thousands of bats have flown in to roost and live in the tall trees within the temple grounds. Every evening, thousands of bats swarm, covering the sky above the pagoda. They settle on the large tree branches, living and giving birth right there.

While there are other temples with large grounds like Doi Pagoda, what is unique is that bats only gather in large numbers here. As a result, the locals and the monks consider this a good omen, offering food to the bats and protecting them.
Today, the number of bats at Doi Pagoda is much smaller than in the past. From once housing two hundred thousand bats, the population has dwindled to just a few thousand. Despite this, many tourists still visit the pagoda to witness the vast, tree-filled space with bats hanging from the branches.
The Unique Architecture of Doi Pagoda
Doi Pagoda is designed with several areas, including the main hall, festival organization rooms, Sala, monks' quarters, a tower for the ashes of the deceased, and a guest reception area. The temple grounds are also filled with many trees, creating a cool and refreshing atmosphere.

The temple's architecture is heavily influenced by Khmer culture. The roof is tiled, with the four corners curving upward, adorned with intricate carvings that resemble serpents. Surrounding the main hall are rows of supporting columns. Each column is carved with the image of a celestial maiden, Kemnar, with her hands clasped in prayer.

Deep within the main hall is a statue of Buddha Shakyamuni seated on a lotus throne, approximately 2 meters tall. Nearby is another statue of the Buddha riding the mythical serpent, Muchalinda.
