Sapa is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Among its attractions, the Ta Phin village stands out, drawing visitors with its distinctive herbal bath, a traditional practice of the Red Dao people.
Ta Phin village is famous for offering the unique herbal bath service.

Sapa's mountainous terrain, blessed by nature and nestled within ancient rainforests, is home to a rich variety of flora. The Red Dao people, deeply connected to the mountains, possess extensive knowledge of medicinal plants. With the rise of tourism in Sapa, the herbal bath has become a signature attraction of the region.

Currently, around 40 families in Ta Phin offer herbal bath services, making it one of the villages with the highest number of such providers in Lao Cai. The herbal bath originated as a remedy for postpartum women and newborns. Among the Dao community, women are especially knowledgeable about where medicinal plants grow and how to harvest them.

Each herbal bath formula crafted by the Dao people includes anywhere from 10 to 120 different types of herbs. These herbs, which are scattered throughout the forests, are carefully selected for their healing properties. The mixture is designed to be beneficial for the skin (such as honeysuckle, starfruit leaves, dill, betel leaves, camphor, and Chinese goldthread), the joints (like hawthorn, earth leech, ginseng, wild peach, hundred herbs, blood tonic, cinnamon bark, and pepper), and digestive health (including saigon ginger, lemongrass, cinnamon, water lily, magnolia, and fennel).

A unique herbal bath product
The herbal bath water will be poured into a wooden tub, with a little cold water added to adjust the temperature to a comfortable warmth. Tourists visiting Sapa should avoid staying in the bath for too long. It's recommended to soak for just 15 to 20 minutes to avoid feeling dizzy from the herbs. If you experience sweating, rapid heartbeat, or quick breathing, stop immediately. After getting out of the tub, there's no need to shower again, just dry off and get dressed.

For the Red Dao people in the Ta Phin commune, herbal baths are not just for health care; they are also an ancient cultural tradition. This has attracted tourists from all over to experience the baths and improve their health. Today, Ta Phin also produces products such as tea bags, medicinal paste, liquid medicine, and herbal tablets. If you're traveling to Sapa, don't miss the opportunity to try this unique herbal bath.
