The sacred temple sits atop a hill, surrounded by fertile plains, with a backdrop of blue mountains that highlight the entire structure. The Borobudur complex consists of numerous smaller stupas encircling a main stupa that rises 42 meters tall with 12 levels. To reach the highest stupa, one must ascend stairs and walk through the corridors of these 12 levels, covering over 5 kilometers in length.
Each level of the stupa is adorned with intricately carved bas-reliefs depicting the life of the Buddha and the earthly realm. These carvings run along the corridors and illustrate the stages of a person's life as they strive towards spiritual perfection.

You can visit Borobudur at any time of the year, but if possible, plan your visit during the Buddha's Birthday (the full moon of April). On this day, a grand ceremony is held to welcome thousands of visitors for prayers and offerings.
