The story behind Taiwan's Rainbow Village is closely tied to the life of Mr. Huang Yung-Fu, born in 1924 as the eldest of four siblings in a family from Guangdong. Although he had a passion for art from an early age, he never had the chance to showcase his talent. In 1946, he joined the military and became part of the Kuomintang. In 1949, he moved to Taiwan with other soldiers and was provided with housing.

In 2010, the Taiwanese government planned to purchase the entire land of the village, demolish it, and redevelop the area. Previously, the village was home to approximately 1,200 families, and after accepting compensation, most of the residents had relocated.

However, Huang and a few other villagers remained determined to stay in the village. At that time, only 11 houses remained. Disheartened by the impending demolition of the place he had called home for so many years, and feeling the urge to protect it, Huang began painting vibrant and unique artworks on his house and those of his neighbors. His creations were visually stunning and drew the attention of many.

A pivotal event that changed the village's 'fate' occurred when students from Ling Tung University and Hung Kuang University nearby took notice of his artwork. They petitioned the Taichung mayor to preserve these works at the 11 remaining houses.
