1. Detailed Information About Munich Airport
Munich International Airport, officially known as Franz Josef Strauss International Airport (German: Flughafen München Franz Josef Strauß), is located 28 kilometers northeast of Munich, Germany. By 2012, the airport had already served over 38 million passengers, making it the second busiest airport in Germany, the sixth busiest in Europe, and the 26th in the world by passenger traffic. It is currently a hub for Lufthansa and other airlines in the Star Alliance network.
The international travel and lifestyle magazine Monocle has recognized this airport as the most efficient and smoothly operated international air hub, particularly in terms of handling traffic, transportation, and layovers.
For many consecutive years, Munich Airport has consistently ranked among the top 10 best airports in Europe and among the top 20 best airports worldwide.
Terminal System
Munich Airport has two passenger terminals, which are divided into three sections: Terminal 1, the central area, and Terminal 2.
Munich Airport features a modern terminal system
The central area of Munich Airport is located between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. This area serves as a hub for shopping, conferences, and business activities.
+ Terminal 1:
This terminal is dedicated to airlines in the Star Alliance network (except Turkish Airlines). Terminal 1 is primarily used by airlines such as Air Berlin, Condor, Emirates, Qatar Airways, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, easyJet, and TUIfly.
Terminal 1 has 60 gates, 19 jet bridges, and 14 boarding gates. The concourses are labeled A-F. The terminal opened on May 17, 1992, and has the capacity to serve 20 million passengers annually. It is currently undergoing upgrades to expand retail space and introduce other improvements.
Concourse A to D handles flights within the Schengen area, while concourses B and C serve flights outside the Schengen zone. Concourse E accommodates all inbound flights. Concourse F is located separately near Terminal 2 and is used for flights requiring heightened security, such as those traveling to Israel. Check-in counters for some flights departing from Terminal 1 are located in the central area Z (German: Zentralbereich), which also houses most of the shopping stores, restaurants, and the train station for this terminal.
+ Terminal 2:
Terminal 2 was completed in June 2003. It is the primary terminal for Lufthansa and all other Star Alliance carriers operating in Munich, except for Turkish Airlines. Star Alliance partners such as Air Malta, Luxair, and BMI Regional also use Terminal 2.
Unlike Terminal 1, Terminal 2 is not divided into concourses. Instead, all facilities are arranged around a central building known as the Plaza. Due to security regulations imposed by the European Union, the terminal is equipped with measures to manage passengers from countries considered unsafe. This required a different design from other airports, as there are no separate areas for departing and arriving passengers.
Terminal 2 consists of the Plaza center and boarding gates located in both the North and South sections. The terminal spans several floors: the arrivals area and some check-in counters are on the third floor; all other check-in counters, security checkpoints, and duty-free shops are on the fourth floor; the information desks, as well as restaurants and art exhibitions, are found on the fifth floor.
Terminal 2 has two main departure levels: the fourth and fifth floors, with additional bus gates on the third floor. The gates on the fifth floor (H) are designated for non-Schengen flights. The lower fourth floor (G) handles Schengen flights. The bus gates on the third floor are also classified as G and are used for Schengen departures. The third floor is smaller than the main levels and is divided into two separate areas.
Due to the high volume of passengers, a third terminal is currently under construction, being planned and rapidly completed to accommodate the growing demand.
2. Airlines Flying to/from Munich Airport
To shorten the travel time between Vietnam and Munich, many tourists have chosen air travel for their journey. As the demand for tourism and exploration in Munich grows, the city is becoming an ideal destination for airlines to operate flights to and from this location.
Currently, no airline operates direct flights from Vietnam to Munich, meaning you will need to take flights with one or two layovers. Mytour recommends that, in addition to looking for cheap tickets, you should also consider flight durations and avoid choosing flights with too many stops or excessively long travel times.
There are two cities offering flights to Munich: Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Each airline offers different ticket prices and flight frequencies for each route. In reality, ticket prices fluctuate depending on the day, time of booking, and fare class. Finding the cheapest tickets remains a common dilemma. 3. How to Travel from Munich Airport to the City
The airport is located 28 kilometers from the city center, so getting to the city is quite easy.
S-Bahn Trains
Munich is connected to the airport by S-Bahn train lines. The S1 line travels through the western districts, while the S8 line covers the eastern areas. The train station is located in Terminal 1, on the second floor (underground). If you're planning to head to the city center or Munich Central Station (München Hauptbahnhof), catch the next available train, as both routes take around 45 minutes to reach downtown. Trains run every 10 minutes during the day and continue operating through the night, though with fewer services overnight.
The fare for a single journey is €11.20 (4 zones). If you plan to travel more extensively within Munich on the same day, consider purchasing a day ticket (valid for the entire network) for €12.80. For groups of two or more, a Group Day Ticket (valid for the entire network) is available for €23.90, covering up to five people.
A slightly cheaper option is to purchase a day ticket for the outer zone (Tageskarte (Außenraum)), valid for one day within the city's suburbs, covering the green, yellow, and red areas. The price for one person is €6.60, while a group ticket costs €12.60. For additional individual tickets within the inner city (white zone), it costs €2.80 per person per trip.
Make sure your ticket is validated once (and only once; no second validation) before boarding the train. Validation machines are located at the top of the escalator to the station and right by the ticket machines on the platform. There are no validation machines inside the trains. Additionally, ensure you validate your ticket on the right side (marked "HIER ENTWERTEN"). Boarding the train without a validated ticket means you do not have a valid ticket!
The Bayern day ticket (Bayern Ticket) is also valid on the S-Bahn. It costs €25 for one person, and an additional €6 per person for up to five people. You must write the name of each passenger on the ticket. If you purchase it from the machine for a specific day, it does not need further validation.
Unlike Frankfurt Airport, Munich Airport does not have local or long-distance trains. For destinations like Nuremberg, Regensburg, Würzburg, and Bamberg, you don't need to go into the city to reach the central station. The quickest way to get to these places by public transport is to take bus 635 from the airport to the city of Freising (about a 20-minute ride), and then catch a train from there. Don’t worry about finding the Freising station as the bus stops right next to it.
The Deutsche Bahn counter is open daily from 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM. If the counter is closed, you can simply purchase tickets from one of the automatic vending machines.
The S-Bahn trains are a popular way to travel from Munich Airport to the city center.
Bus Services
The bus terminals are located at the front of the central area on the 3rd floor, in front of sections A and D of Terminal 1. Additionally, there are bus stops at the northern entrance to Terminal 2 on the 4th floor. Other bus stations are located at the Holiday parking area (Urlauberparkplatz) P41, near halls A/B of Terminal 1, and at the front of Terminal 2.
Lufthansa offers express buses to/from Munich Central Station, traveling through the Schwabing area. The one-way fare is €10.50 or €17 for a round-trip. The buses operate every 15 minutes. You don't need a Lufthansa flight ticket to use the bus service. Lufthansa also provides a shuttle service to Regensburg.

Taxi stands are located outside Terminal 1 at both the arrival and departure levels near Gate E04, right in front of Gate A-E. You can also find taxis at Terminal 2 at the bus and taxi stop near the northern exit of Gate E03 and Gate E04, as well as the northern section of the MAC central area at Gate E03. The fare to the city center of Munich is approximately €60.
Car
To drive from Munich to Deggendorf, follow the A92 Autobahn. Take exit 6, Dreieck Flughafen. If you are coming from Passau, drive along B388 or the A94 Autobahn and the eastern airport road (Flughafentangente Ost).
- Parking at Munich Airport
There are a variety of parking lots and garages available. Short-term parking areas are located next to the terminals for those picking up passengers at the arrival hall. Additionally, you can find parking garages with spaces marked P1-P5, P7, P8, and P20 near the terminals. The parking fee is €175 for 7 days, and €30 for each additional day.
Parking spaces for travelers (Urlauberparkplatz) are located at P41, P80, and P81 along Flughafenallee. From there, a free shuttle bus is available to the terminals for parking ticket holders. Parking for 3-7 days costs €35, with an additional charge of €2 for each extra day.
4. Important notes for customs procedures in Munich
Whether you're stopping in Munich or any other airport in Germany, it's essential to have the necessary documents prepared.
+ A return flight ticket is required.
+ Passport, Visa: These two travel documents are mandatory if you're visiting Germany, so be sure to complete the application process if you don't already have them.
+ Cash for airport taxes: At some airports, you'll be required to pay a small fee, typically in the local currency. To avoid unfavorable exchange rates at the airport, it's advisable to have this amount ready in advance. Additionally, it's a good idea to bring some German currency with you, so you can spend it without needing to exchange money at the airport.
- The process for customs clearance at Munich Airport follows the same rules as at other airports.
+ After disembarking, follow the signs to the customs area for immigration procedures: At the immigration counters, be mindful of the signs indicating different lines for diplomats, locals, and foreign travelers.
