Thailand is introducing a passport-free exit system starting December 1, 2024, at six major airports. This new biometric face recognition technology will help international travelers save time. Let's dive into the details of this exciting development!
According to the latest report from Bangkok Post, starting from December 1, 2024, Thailand will officially roll out a passport-free exit system at six major airports across the country. Kirati Kitmanawat, Director of the National Aviation Authority of Thailand, explained that international tourists departing Thailand will replace passports with biometric facial recognition technology, offering a faster and more convenient experience for passengers.
Airports that will implement this technology include Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang (Chiang Rai), Phuket, and Hat Yai. Thanks to biometric technology, travelers can now move from the check-in desk to the boarding gate without needing to present a passport or flight ticket.
New Passport-Free Departure Methods in Thailand

Thailand offers two options for passengers who wish to experience passport-free departures:
- Option 1: In-person check-in at the airport. Passengers with a passport simply need to activate the biometric system, which stores and recognizes their facial information during check-in at the counter.
- Option 2: Online check-in. For passengers who have already checked in online, they can select the airline, click “register,” and scan the barcode of their boarding pass. Afterward, they will scan their passport (or ID card for Thai citizens) and face for identity verification. However, Thailand has not provided specific information on whether this method applies to those who have not previously activated biometric recognition.
Both methods above enable the storage of passengers' biometric data. Once verified, travelers can proceed directly to the departure gate without needing to present a passport.
Benefits of Implementing Biometric Technology for Departures in Thailand

Kirati explained that check-in machines at airports have been updated to support biometric technology. Thailand's primary goal is to enhance the customer experience by reducing wait times and increasing convenience for travelers. With the time saved, passengers can comfortably explore the airport's dining and duty-free shopping areas.

Thailand is experiencing a significant rise in passenger traffic. Statistics show that, in the past year, traffic at the six airports has increased by nearly 20% compared to the same period last year, reaching nearly 120 million passengers. With expanded international flight connections, Thailand is expected to welcome around 130 million passengers in 2024.
Singapore - The First Country in the Region to Trial Automated Departures

Not only Thailand, but Singapore has also pioneered the implementation of a passport-free check-in system starting September 30 at all four terminals of Changi Airport. The facial and iris recognition system allows passengers to complete immigration procedures in just 10 seconds. Singapore citizens, permanent residents, and long-term pass holders can enter and exit the airport using only biometric verification, without needing a passport. However, international visitors to Singapore still need to present identification upon arrival, even though they can depart without a passport.
