In the heart of bustling Can Tho lies an ancient village with a history stretching over a century. Long Tuyền Village, situated in Bình Thủy district, offers visitors a chance to explore its many historical sites.
Long Tuyền Village in the Heart of Can Tho
The name Long Tuyền originated in 1908, meaning 'Dragon Stream.' The head of Long Tuyền resembles a dragon's mouth, while the stream itself twists and curves like the dragon's body. Once a commune, Long Tuyền has evolved into a region encompassing a vast area. With its rich cultural and historical landmarks, the area is now known as Long Tuyền Ancient Village, with Bình Thủy Temple marking its center.

The lives of Long Tuyền's people were once prosperous, as evidenced by the many ancient structures still standing today. Bình Thủy Temple or Long Tuyền Old Temple is considered the birthplace and symbol of the village's early development. Legend has it that in 1844, Long Tuyền was struck by a devastating flood, destroying homes and crops. In hopes of bringing good weather, the villagers built a wooden, bamboo, and thatch temple on the site of the present Bình Thủy Temple.
Bình Thủy Temple and Nam Nhã Pagoda
Bình Thủy Temple holds the historical roots of the Long Tuyền Ancient Village. From the front hall to the rear hall, the structure is adorned with exquisite decorations, including wooden beams, horizontal lacquered boards, and poetic couplets. Despite the passage of time, the temple's roof remains intact, preserving its original form. It has become a must-visit attraction for travelers to Can Tho.

Opposite Bình Thủy Temple, Nam Nhã Pagoda stands out with its unique architecture. From the outside, its design is unlike the typical pagodas found in the Mekong Delta. At first glance, it might be mistaken for the home of a wealthy landowner, with its blend of Eastern and Western architectural styles. The pagoda once served as a communication hub for revolutionary organizations across the region. Today, it is a place where locals and tourists come to worship and reflect.

Bình Thủy Ancient House
Long Tuyền Ancient Village also attracts visitors with the beauty of its old houses. The village still boasts 13 ancient homes passed down from ancestors to future generations. Most of these houses retain their original architectural design. Among them, Bình Thủy Ancient House and Vườn Lan Ancient House are particularly notable. The latter is named for the abundance of orchids surrounding it, with flowers in full bloom at any given time, offering visitors a chance to enjoy their beauty.

Vườn Lan Ancient House is a unique fusion of Eastern and Western styles. The exterior of the house follows a Western architectural design, resembling a sturdy French mansion. Inside, it features traditional Eastern architecture with three main rooms and two side rooms. The front room is for receiving guests, the middle room is dedicated to ancestor worship, and the back room serves as living quarters. When visiting, guests are often welcomed by descendants of the Dương family, who share the history of their ancestral home.

A visit to Long Tuyền Ancient Village wouldn't be complete without tasting its local cuisine. The most famous dish is Dương family puffed rice cakes, made from pure shrimp meat and egg whites. Every step of the preparation is done by hand, showcasing the unique culinary traditions of the village's people.
