What is Batik Painting?
Malaysian Batik painting is a traditional fabric decoration technique using beeswax and dyes to create intricate patterns. Malaysian Batik often features floral, bird, and animal motifs, reflecting tropical nature, with vibrant colors like red, green, yellow, and orange.
This technique has been passed down through generations and is a vital part of Malaysia's cultural heritage. Batik is typically handmade, with each piece being unique and reflecting the artisan's personal touch. It is commonly used in traditional Malaysian attire and decorative items like paintings, tablecloths, bags, and accessories.
Batik painting is not just a fabric dyeing method but also a symbol of cultural diversity and artistic creativity. Batik art has become an integral part of Malaysian life and festivals, showcasing respect for and preservation of traditional values.
Review of Batik Painting Experience at Jadi Batek Kuala Lumpur
Upon entering Jadi Batek, the workshop is held in a spacious area surrounded by intricate Batik paintings that you can admire for inspiration or even purchase as souvenirs. You can also observe experienced staff carefully crafting Batik fabric designs in the center of the room.
Before starting, we were given the choice to paint on pre-drawn Batik designs or create our own Batik designs from scratch. The pre-drawn designs are essentially wax outlines beautifully sketched on cotton or silk canvas, featuring a variety of charming and visually appealing patterns.
1. Batik Painting
The first step in creating your own Batik artwork is sketching. I drew my sketch on a white cotton canvas, and since I'm not a professional artist, I chose to follow a pre-designed template.
The Batik wax was already melted in an electric pot, ready for use. Under the guidance of experienced staff, I learned how to use a canting to scoop hot wax and draw. This was the most challenging part—the wax cools quickly on the fabric, so I had to work swiftly before it hardened, or else I’d have to refill the wax multiple times.
2. Coloring the Batik
After outlining, I moved on to coloring. Each participant was given a set of diluted dyes in nine colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, and white, along with two brushes. I found coloring to be incredibly therapeutic—it helped me forget all my stress and worries, allowing me to focus entirely on creating something beautiful.
The colors spread easily on the fabric, making the process simple, and thanks to the wax outlines, there was no risk of colors bleeding outside the lines. While coloring, it felt just like those paint-by-number apps, but way more fun and authentic ^^.
3. The Final Result
Here’s the final result after we filled in all the colors—what do you think? Does it look good?
We had to wait about half an hour for the painting to dry completely before taking it home. The staff offered to help remove the wax outlines, but it would take an additional hour of waiting. While waiting, we stopped by some nearby eateries for a quick snack.
We truly enjoyed our time at Jadi Batek, learning about this traditional art and technique. I highly recommend visiting here with friends or family—it’s a super fun and worthwhile experience that brings people closer together!

What Should First-Time Batik Painting Participants Keep in Mind?
1. Choose the Right Workshop
You’ll only need to pay for the workshop you choose to join. There are two popular options:
- Batik Coloring Only: RM30 (~164,790 per person)
- Batik Drawing + Coloring: RM60 (~368,609 per person)
2. Batik Painting Schedule in Kuala Lumpur
Jadi Batek is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, but Batik workshops are held only twice a day at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. To avoid missing out, it’s recommended to book your tickets in advance on Mytour for your preferred date and time!
3. How to Get to Jadi Batek
Jadi Batek is located in the Imbi area, close to Kuala Lumpur’s city center. The nearest MRT station is Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), just a 5-minute walk away. If you’re driving, there’s ample free parking available.
