Located in the west of the Tianshan Mountains, Sayram Lake is the largest and highest mountain lake in Xinjiang. With its charming natural scenery and captivating legends, it has become an unmissable destination.
Sayram Lake on the Tianshan Mountains
Sayram Lake lies at an elevation of 2,000 meters, covering an area of 458 km2 in Xinjiang. It is the largest freshwater lake at the highest altitude in the world. The lake is believed to have formed around 70 million years ago. Known for its picturesque beauty, the lake and the surrounding grasslands in Xinjiang have been dubbed the "emerald gem" and the "last tear of the Atlantic Ocean."

It is called the "last tear drop" because Xinjiang is located to the east of the Atlantic Ocean. Warm, humid air currents from the sea blow into the region. These air currents are blocked by the Tianshan Mountains, causing rain. Over time, this process formed the freshwater lake. It is one of the few lakes formed by rainfall at the mountain's peak.

Sayram Lake is also surrounded by a tragic love story. According to the legend, there was once a passionate love between a Kazakh boy and girl. The girl's beauty unwittingly attracted a demon, who kidnapped her to make her his bride. Overcome with grief, she threw herself into a deep ravine. The boy followed and reunited with her. Their sorrowful tears formed the lake, clear as jade.

Experience at Sayram Lake
The scenery at Sayram changes with distinct seasons. The best time to visit is in June and November. The lake’s surface is as still as a mirror, reflecting the majestic mountains. In June, the summer season, is also when pairs of swans and wild geese migrate to the lake. On the vast grassy shores, herds of goats, sheep, and horses graze peacefully. At the end of July, the Kazakh people celebrate the Nadam Festival for six days, where they wear traditional attire and participate in horse racing, archery, and wrestling.

The entrance fee for visiting Sayram Lake is approximately 143 yuan (around 500,000 VND). There are no accommodations around the lake or nearby attractions. Visitors can only take photos and enjoy the area during the day, but overnight stays are not permitted. It is best to enter through the East Gate, go around the lake counterclockwise, and exit through the South Gate.

There are several famous photo spots in the area, including the lighthouse, the sunrise station, Borhan Mountain, Swan Lake, the sloping pine tree, and the Guozigou Bridge. Xinjiang is a region that receives a lot of ultraviolet rays, and the temperature difference between day and night is significant. Therefore, it is advised to bring appropriate clothing and sunscreen. Additionally, visitors should carry food and drinks, as the lake is vast, and exploring it will take a considerable amount of time.
