The History of Hon Cau Con Dao
Hon Cau Con Dao was once an ancient village during the reign of King Gia Long, known as 'Xom Ba Thiet'. Hon Cau is one of the two islands in the Con Son Archipelago that has underground freshwater sources. In front of Hon Cau lies a long stretch of white sandy beach, bordered by a crescent-shaped mountain range, interspersed with rows of coconut trees and towering Phong Ba trees.
Hon Cau is located nearly 8 km northeast of Con Son Island. The only way to reach Hon Cau is by canoe. Historical records suggest that this was one of the first places where people began settling in the 14th century. The French colonists constructed several prisons on the island to detain many national heroes. Today, remnants of a prison where Prime Minister Pham Van Dong was held from 1930 to 1931 can still be seen on the island.
