Despite airlines continuously adding extra flights, Tet holiday plane tickets remain sold out on numerous routes, primarily from Ho Chi Minh City to Northern and Central provinces.
High Demand for Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Northern and Central Regions
This year, the Lunar New Year holiday is quite long, spanning from the 26th of the Lunar December to the 5th of the Lunar January (25/1 – 2/2/2025). Train and bus tickets sold out quickly, prompting many to opt for air travel.
However, Tet airline tickets are exorbitantly priced. Reports indicate that daytime flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Da Nang are fully booked. Only a few late-night and early-morning flights remain, priced between 3-5 million VND. Vietnam Airlines has run out of economy seats, leaving only business class available.

Peak travel days to the Central region are fully booked on the 26th, 27th, and 28th of Tet. Tickets are only available from the 29th onward. Notably, direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh are completely sold out, forcing passengers to choose connecting flights via Hanoi before reaching Nghe An. Prices are exceptionally high, reaching up to 11.6 million VND, even for economy class.
Routes from Ho Chi Minh City to Pleiku, Hue, Quy Nhon, Thanh Hoa, and Chu Lai are also under immense pressure. Tickets are continuously sold out despite airlines adding more flights.
Airlines Continuously Add More Flights
Facing the early sell-out of Tet airline tickets, airlines have devised plans to continuously add more flights. As of January 10, 2025, Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and Vietjet Air have collectively added 522 flights, equivalent to 133,000 seats. However, Tet tickets are still selling out rapidly, reflecting the high demand during this peak season.
To address this pressure, airlines are implementing wet leasing (leasing both aircraft and crew). Vietnam Airlines has added three wet-leased Airbus A320 aircraft, which will help increase nearly 400 flights. Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways have also added several wet-leased aircraft.

Additionally, the Civil Aviation Authority has directed airlines to operate more night flights to alleviate congestion. Passengers are encouraged to book tickets during off-peak hours to avoid crowds and ensure a smooth journey.
