Linked to a fascinating legend about its Buddha statue, Thanh Lương Pagoda in Phú Yên also impresses visitors with its construction using coconut shells and coral.
Thanh Lương Pagoda in the Land of Nẫu

Thanh Lương Pagoda in Phú Yên is located in Mỹ Quang Nam village, An Chấn commune, Tuy An district. Situated about 500 meters from the sea, the temple offers a serene atmosphere and a cool climate. The local residents around the temple primarily earn their livelihood through fishing. Once a place frequented only by locals, the pagoda has now gained fame among tourists.

The wooden statue of Quan Thế Âm in the temple also carries a mysterious tale. On February 24, 2004, near Hòn Dứa, fishermen discovered the statue. Since then, it has been enshrined in the temple. The statue stands 2.2 meters tall, weighs 74 kilograms, and is 0.6 meters wide. The story of the Buddha statue has made the temple famous and attracted numerous visitors.

What makes the pagoda, built in 1956, truly special is its construction using coral. As a result, Thanh Lương Pagoda in Phú Yên is a unique spiritual space infused with the essence of the sea. The temple consists of four main sections: the Tam Quan gate, Long Thủy pond, Quan Âm shrine, and the meditation hall. The beams, rafters, pillars, and roof are all made from coral. The coral blocks were meticulously sorted, carved, polished, and assembled.

The temple is constructed from coral and coconut shells
In its construction, coral and seawater were used as alternatives to cement and concrete, though not extensively. The craftsmen utilized all available materials to build the temple. Besides coral, they also used seashells to create flagpole bases. Additionally, they incorporated mother-of-pearl, shaped into Quan Âm Buddha figures, for decorative panels.

Another crucial material was coconut shells. These were polished smooth and used as a substitute for wood, creating a harmonious blend with the overall structure. The craftsmanship is further showcased in the intricate dragon heads and wave-like patterns adorning the temple’s roof, adding significant aesthetic value.

Thanh Lương Pagoda in Phú Yên has added a 7-meter-tall statue of the Buddha, nestled within Long Ẩn Lake. Another Quan Âm statue sits atop a lotus pedestal in the temple courtyard. Together, these create a tranquil environment, ideal for those seeking peace and serenity.
