The Hoa Lo Prison, once a quiet landmark in Tran Hung Dao Ward, Hai Ba Trung District, has now evolved into a must-see destination for many young visitors seeking unique experiences.
The Establishment of Hoa Lo Prison

In the late 19th century, in response to rising resistance movements, the French colonialists intensified repression by increasing the police force, strengthening the court system, and expanding the prison network. In 1896, on the land of Phu Khanh village, Vinh Xuong commune, Tho Xuong district, the French constructed the Hoa Lo Prison. This was one of the largest prisons in Indochina.

Originally a pottery village, the French transformed the Hoa Lo area into a place of confinement and punishment for prisoners. Despite its harsh conditions, the prison became a stronghold of revolutionary thought, spreading revolutionary ideas. Many individuals organized escapes, returning to the people and their organizations. From August 5, 1964, to March 31, 1973, the prison was used to detain American pilots, who humorously nicknamed it the 'Hanoi Hilton.'

In 1993, the government decided to repurpose the Hoa Lo Prison. The remaining southeastern section was preserved, restored, and upgraded. It was later classified as a historical monument of Hanoi. It is now home to a memorial dedicated to the patriotic martyrs who bravely sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of the nation.

Experiences at the historical site
Not only open during the day, the site also organizes night tours. Visitors can experience the story of the resilient revolutionaries who fought in the darkness of the prison. The site has gained widespread attention and support from many tourists. A unique 'double bar' symbol is stamped on each visitor's hand, representing the bond of those who 'shared hardships' in prison.

Here, visitors will be amazed by the vivid reenactment of the brutal conditions within the prison. From the barbaric torture methods to the harsh living conditions. The space, the layout of the exploration path, and the stories of the condemned prisoners are all well-arranged. Together, they form a historical tribute to the Hoa Lo Prison, preserving the proud history at the heart of the capital.

The products at the historical site are highly favored by tourists. Some popular items include the unique 'leaf cake' and 'leaf tea' that come with fascinating stories. Currently, the entrance fee for daytime visits to Hoa Lo Prison is 50,000 VND. Night tour prices range from 399,000 to 499,000 VND per visit. For those wishing to experience a larger-scale night reenactment, advance reservations are required.
