The Son Tra Peninsula is located about 10 km from the center of Da Nang. It serves as the green lung of the city. With its unique features, each season brings a breathtaking color to this area. In particular, April and May mark the time when the purple hue of the cool-scented flower decorates the entire forest.
The cool-scented flower, also known as mac bat, than mut, or duoc ca, has the scientific name Millettia ichthyochtona and belongs to the legume family. Despite its striking colors, this flower blooms for only a short period. Therefore, many visitors and photographers take advantage of this brief window to admire and capture its beauty.
The cool-scented flower is native to the Son Tra Peninsula. This plant has been successfully cultivated in urban areas, where it can replace other species in parks and streets, adding a distinctive touch to the city of Da Nang. Currently, the flower is mostly concentrated around Suoi Om, near Yet Kieu street, and the Tien Sa port area.
The cool-scented flower and the brown-legged macaque
Amidst the purple blossoms of the cool-scented flower, the brown-legged macaques – the primates endemic to Indochina – can be seen. The cool-scented flower is a favorite food of these monkeys. The Son Tra Peninsula is home to the world's largest population of brown-legged macaques in the wild, with approximately 300-400 individuals recorded.
To fully appreciate the beauty of the flowers and capture moments of the brown-legged macaques, visitors should come in the early morning or at dusk. The Son Tra Peninsula also hosts a variety of other purple flowers, such as sim and mua flowers. Additionally, the yellow hue of the lim xet flower and the pure white of the bindweed flower add to the colorful landscape. Together, they create a vivid and familiar natural picture.
