Yuyuan Garden is the most famous classical Chinese garden located in the heart of Shanghai. If you're visiting China, this unique garden is a must-see!
An Introduction to Yuyuan Garden

When traveling in China, you can't miss Yuyuan Garden, a standout attraction in Shanghai. Known as the 'Crown of Beauty in Southeastern China', this garden is situated in the northeastern part of the city's old town, close to the Bund and other famous landmarks.

Yuyuan Garden was constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) and has stood for over 450 years. The garden's creator was a high-ranking official from Sichuan. In 1559, he began collecting rocks, digging ponds, and building on his land to provide his aging father with a tranquil retirement. After more than two decades of work, the garden was completed.

Having endured several major wars in Chinese history, the garden was severely damaged, with many structures destroyed. Local authorities and residents made efforts to restore the remaining buildings, and the garden has since become a major tourist attraction, not only for its beauty but also for its historical significance.

The garden currently covers 2 hectares, featuring ponds, rockeries, bridges, dragon walls, gardens, and traditional buildings. As visitors enter the garden, surprises await at every corner. Each section has its own unique features and attractions. These areas are separated by 'dragon walls' with undulating gray brick edges.

Areas within Yuyuan Garden
Yuyuan Garden offers six main areas for visitors to explore during their China travel. These are the San Shui Tang, Dian Chun Tang, Hui Jing Lou, Wan Hua Lou, Nei Yuan, and the Yu Hua Tang. San Shui Tang is considered the largest pavilion in the garden. While Yu Hua Tang is known for its delicate beauty, San Shui Tang has a more rustic charm. It features intricate carvings that depict scenes of abundant harvests. Nei Yuan is home to many strangely shaped rocks, positioned beside tranquil ponds.

Around the garden, there are several shops housed in multi-story wooden buildings surrounding a small pond, creating an ancient atmosphere. Visitors to Yuyuan Garden not only come for sightseeing but also to enjoy the delicious food at renowned restaurants. A variety of local cuisines and tea ceremonies from different regions can be found near the garden.

In addition to sightseeing, Yuyuan Garden regularly hosts artistic events. Some notable activities include flower, stone, painting, tea, and lantern exhibitions. If you visit during the right time, you’ll experience a lively and bustling atmosphere. Most exciting of all is the opportunity to admire eye-catching modern artworks combined with traditional styles.
