Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Chaiwatthanaram was constructed in 1630 by King Prasat Thong to honor his mother. The temple is modeled after the Angkor temple.
The historic Wat Chaiwatthanaram temple

Wat Chaiwatthanaram is one of the most visited historical sites in Ayutthaya. It is a prime example of Khmer architecture, strongly influenced by the design of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The temple follows the 'Prang' central style, a characteristic tower of Khmer architecture.

At the center, there is a tall main prang surrounded by four smaller prangs. This structure symbolizes Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Buddhist and Hindu beliefs. Both the main and smaller prangs are adorned with intricate stucco, depicting scenes from the Jataka tales (the Buddha's past lives) and Hindu gods.

Preserving the heritage of the ancient temple
Wat Chaiwatthanaram holds a significant place in Thai history. It was not only a religious center but also a key site for ceremonies and politics during the Ayutthaya period. However, in 1767, the city of Ayutthaya was attacked and destroyed by Burmese forces. The temple was severely damaged and abandoned at that time.
